2013 Longoria Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

13.3% alc., pH 3.64, TA 0.61, 100 cases, $50. After 20 years of producing Pinot Noir from this vineyard, Rick stopped working with the grapes after the 2006 vintage. In 2013, during a luncheon honoring cofounder Michael Benedict at Sanford & Benedict Vineyard’s iconic bar Rick was inspired to return to the vineyard as a source of Pinot Noir. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Intriguing aromas of blackberry pie and incense. Mid weight plus flavors of earthy blackberry jam and Hoison sauce accented with toasty oak. The tannic load is noticeable in this wine resulting in an astringent finish at present. Short term cellaring should alleviate some of the aggressive tannins. Score: 89. 2012 Sandhi Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

13.5% alc., $65. Sourced from the original 1971 plantings at Sanford & Benedict Vineyard. · Medium reddish purple color in the glass. Very engaging nose that is whole cluster inspired with aromas of rose petal, spicy cola, cherry and spiced pear. Soft and silky on the palate with succulent flavors of red cherry and red berries with a hint of dried leaf and rose water in the background. More brightness and more savory than the Rinconada bottling. Plenty of bones for aging, with a nice interplay of juicy acidity and suede tannins on the finish. A sommelier’s wine built for food. Considerable better and more expressive the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle with plenty of spice, cola and fruit flavors dancing on the palate. Score: 94. 2006 Sanford Sanford & Benedict Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir

14.5% alc., $40. · Restrained scents of black cherries, smoke, minerals and a hint of alcohol. Plentiful, dirt-crusted cherry and black raspberry fruits embrace the palate. A peculiar chemical taste and a bit of bitterness on the finish ruin the experience. Disappointing considering the pedigree of this vineyard. Reviewed October 1, 2008 WINERY » ARTICLE »
