2012 Gary Farrell Hallberg Vineyard 777 Oak Tank Fermented 17% Whole Cluster Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 14.3% alc., pH 3.50, TA 0.70, 120 cases, $65. Released June 2014. Clone 777 from Block M of the 100- acre Hallberg Vineyard. Partially de-stemmed with whole clusters placed on top of the de-stemmed fruit so the stems could dry and develop more spice and refined tannins. Foot treading of the grapes was used initially to macerate, then 1 to 2 punch downs per day. 10 to 15-day post fermentation extended maceration. Aged 14 months in 50% new French oak barrels on primary lees. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is very shy upon opening but explodes with aromatic goodness the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Plenty of spicy black berries seduce the senses on the mid to full-bodied palate and fruit-charged finish. Rather exotic, even fascinating, with many nuances unfolding over time in the glass. There is enough fruit to balance the wine’s broad shouldered tannins which will need some time in bottle to fully soften and integrate. A connoisseur's wine. Score: 94. Reviewed July 19, 2014
