Lively aromas of fresh black cherries, blueberries and black raspberries with a hint of oak spice. Very smooth on entry and flavorful, offering mid weight tastes that echo the aromas with accents of oak vanillin, black tea and spice. Admirable finesse, with a rousing finish that is quite generous. 2011 Talbott Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Estate Grown Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 14.3% alc., pH 3.80, TA 0.60, $42. · Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. Lovely perfume of black cherries, black plum, balsam and spice which grabs your attention. More concentration and structure than the Kali Hart and Logan, but still very approachable and light on its feet. Beguiling flavors of dark stone fruits with a riff of oak vanillin and spice. 2010 Talbott Kali Hart Estate Grown Monterey Pinot Noir 14.2% alc., pH 3.87, TA 0.63, $21, screwcap. 100% estate grown fruit from Sleepy Hollow Vineyard, sourced from vines that range from 10 to 40 years old. This wine is made to be bright and appealing upon release. 100% de-stemmed, aged 9 months in 20% new French oak barrels. Kali Hart Pinot Noir is named after Robb Talbott’s youngest daughter. · Medium purple color in the glass. Aromas of very ripe, even roasted purple fruits. Intensely fruited with nearly over ripe flavors of blackberries and sweet plums with a note of black tea. Drinks smooth and easy with a flourish of sweet fruit on the finish. 2010 Talbott Logan Estate Grown Monterey Pinot Noir 14.9% alc., pH 3.80, TA 0.65, $25. Meant to be a fruit-driven expression of the Talbott house style coupled with the complexity that Sleepy Hollow Vineyard is known for. Logan Pinot Noir is named after Robb Talbott’s son. 100% destemmed, aged 10 months in 20% new French oak barrels. · Medium reddish color in the glass. Shy aromas of blackberry jam with an oaky, earthy undertone. Middleweight sappy flavors of dark berries and plum reduction sauce with a hint of oak-driven coffee in the background. 2010 Talbott Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Estate Grown Monterey Pinot Noir 14.9% alc., pH 3.68, TA 0.64, $40. 50% Martini clone planted in 1972 and 50% Dijon clones ranging in age from 15 to 20 years, all from the finest blocks of Sleep Hollow Vineyard. 100% de-stemmed, aged 11 months in 20% new French oak barrels. · Medium reddish-purple color in the glass. Reserved but pleasing aromas of black fruits, violets, tar and oak. Very pretty mid-weight fruited core offering flavors of black currents and blackberries balanced beautifully with ripe tannins and acidity. Impressive freshness, polish, lift and finish. 2009 La Rochelle Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Block A Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 14.7% alc., 275 cases, $48. Released August 2, 2012. Martini and 113 clones. Aged 26 months in 45% new and 55% second use French oak barrels. · Moderate reddish-purple hue in the glass. Smells like a smoke-tainted wine with strong aromas of wood smoke and tar. Unpleasant ash, smoke and tar flavors overwhelm the middleweight dark fruit core which is presented on a silky platform with supple tannins. 2007 Twin Oaks Cellars Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 14.2% alc., $42. · Aromas of ripe dark stone fruits, vanillin, green garden and fennel. Moderately rich flavors of black currants, cassis and cola with a hint of citrus peel on the crisp finish. Supple tannins and a silky mouth feel add to the appeal. Good. 2007 Seawind Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., 75 cases, $44. Sourced from older vines, Martini clone. 100% de-stemmed. Fermented in small open-top fermenters with natural and inoculated yeast. Aged 10 months in 33% new French oak. · Dark ruby color. Aromas of black cherries and toasted brioche. 2007 Seawind Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., 75 cases, $44. Owner and winemaker Ken Dunkley produces artisan Pinot Noirs from bought fruit at CrushPad in San Francisco. Ken began making wine in 1976 while a student at University California Davis and has had a career in fermented foods and drinks. He started his commercial wine venture in 2006 and has already won awards in major wine competitions. Unfortunately he will not have access to this fruit in future vintages. 100% de-stemmed, 25% whole berries, 4-day cold soak, aged in 25% Francois Freres oak barrels for 9 months. Unfined and unfiltered. Sold on the website. · Moderately deep garnet color with a very slight cloudiness. Very sensual aromatics featuring darker fruits and Asian spices. 2006 Twin Oaks Cellars Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 14.2% alc., $49. Mark has had experience with this vineyard while working at Testarossa. The goal here was to highlight the smoky, earthy qualities of this vineyard using yeasts, barrels and fermentation methods to draw those characteristics out. · The aromas were quite funky initially like a barnyard covered with rotting leaves. With air time, attractive dark red fruits emerged highlighted by herbs, forest floor and smoke. The core of red fruits were quite silky and the wine, although quite understated at first, picked up power in the glass. The velvety texture was a turn-on and the finish was very clean. 2005 Arcadian Sleepy Hollow Vineyard Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., pH 3.44, TA 0.67, 226 cases, $56. A challenging older vineyard to farm. Planted in 1970, now owned by Talbott Winery. Martini and upright clone (Pinot Droid). Aged 14 months in 40% new 3-year-old extra-tight-grain Sirugue French oak barrels. Aged 14 months in bottle. Unfined and unfiltered. Dedicated to Dan Lee (Morgan Vineyard). · Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. A distinctive wine displaying very ripe fruit flavors that is typical for this vineyard in my experience. Aromas of macerated cherries and red raspberries with hints of melon, red currants, marzipan and oak. The flavors veer to darker fruits including black cherries and dark red berries displaying a very ripe, even porto profile. Hints of Asian 5-spice and oak add interest.
