This is the oldest winery in San Mateo County. Proprietor Bob Mullen moved to Woodside in 1954 and bought the current site in 1961. The property already had a vineyard that was used for personal winemaking. Mullen is a self-taught winemaker who bonded his winery in 1963. He has just over 1 acre of vineyard on his property and farms another 17 acres mostly in the Woodside community for the rest of the grapes that go into his wines. Mullen develops vineyards for residents of Woodside including design, installation and maintenance.
Production is 1,800 cases (In 1991, the town of Woodside passed a law restricting wineries to producing no more than 1,000 gallons a year, but Woodside Vineyards and Cronin were grandfathered in, allowing them to produce up to 5,000 gallons or about 2,000 cases).
The full-time winemaker, Brian Caselden, works with Mullen to craft Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, Chardonnay, sparkling wine, and port.
There is no tasting room but barrel tasting events are held periodically. The wines are sold through a mailing list. Much of the production goes to local restaurants. 340 Kings Mountain Road. 415-851-3144.
