The Mountain Winery

This winery has a rich history beginning with Paul Masson, a Frenchman who arrived in California in 1878. In 1888, Masson married Charles Lefranc's daughter Louise. Lefranc was a highly respected vintner at the time. The company known as Maison Lefranc became The Lefranc Masson Wine Co. Masson was interested in producing sparkling wine and Paul Masson "Champagne" became famous worldwide.

When Masson decided to build his own winery, he chose the quite secluded town of Saratoga. The winery, named La Cresta, was completed in 1905. Destroyed by the San Francisco earthquake a year later, by 1907 a new winery stood in its place. Masson became quite successful until Prohibition intervened.

By the time of Repeal in 1933, Masson, now a widower, had lost most of his fortune and in 1936 he sold his winery to Martin Ray. Since then, ownership has changed hands numerous times. In 1958, an amphitheater was built on the grounds and become known for its Summer Concert Series. The current owners of The Mountain Winery have dedicated themselves to protecting the natural beauty of the estate.

The 12 acres of estate vineyards planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay have been revitalized under the direction of winegrower Jeffrey Patterson of Mount Eden who also crafts the wines for The Mountain Winery. The Mountain Winery wines are served at all Mountain Winery special events including weddings. Multiple varietals are produced including Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from estate grapes, and Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel from purchased grapes.

The wines are sold at the tasting room which is open Friday through Sunday (check website for hours) and online.
