Joseph and Genevieve Roche were practicing physicians who moved their family to their newly purchased ranch in southern Sonoma Valley in 1977. They initially continued the property's long history of cattle ranching. In 1982 they were encouraged to plant grapes and that year planted 10 acres of Pinot Noir and 10 acres of Chardonnay. The Carneros appellation at that time did not exist and no other vineyards were nearby. They opened the Roche Carneros Estate Winery in 1989.
Roche produces ten varieties of wine, including an Estate Tipperary Vineyard Pinot Noir and Estate Reserve Pinot Noir, with a total output of 12,000 cases per year. The longtime winemaker is Michael Carr. Visit the tasting room to acquire or the website online.
A new modern winemaking facility and hospitality venue opened in early 2020 on the Roche 500-acre estate. Several tasting experiences are offered including a no-reservations necessary option.
There is a vacation rental located on the winery's estate.
