Twins Peter and Paul Bergatto, along with friend Jon Morgan, began the winery in 1987 after leaving Bargetto Winery, also in the Santa Cruz Mountains, started in 1933 by Peter and Paul's grandfather John Bargetto and his brother, Philip. The winery is located on land once owned by their grandfather, just three miles east of the town of Soquel.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel sourced from vineyards in the Santa Cruz Mountains, Russian River Valley and Napa Valley. The Pinot Noirs, which come from Lester Family Vineyard, Ben Lomond Mountain Vineyard and Saveria Vineyard, all in the Santa Cruz Mountains, have won significant awards in major wine competitions.
Tasting room open weekends 11-4.
2006 Soquel Vineyards Partner’s Reserve Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
14.3% alc., $20. A small winery with a low profile that sells most of its wine to locals. A partnership between Peter and Paul Bargetto and Jon Morgan. The wines tend to be full-bodied in a bolder style. The 2007 vintage wines won several Gold Medals at the 2010 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. · Restrained aromas but appealing ripe black cherry and raspberry scents complimented by savory oak. Fully ripe core of stone fruits and black currants. A moderately rich and intense fruit-driven wine with supple tannins. Not a bashful wine but drinks easy. Very good.
