Amy Wesselman may be best known as the long time Executive Director of the annual International Pinot Noir Celebration in McMinnville, Oregon, (she took a leave between 2009-2010), but she is also a terrific winemaker. Together with co-winemaker David Autrey, the two founded Westrey Wine Company in 1993. The name Westrey comes from their collaborative winemaking effort (Amy WESselman and David AuTREY). Each has had extensive winemaking experience (Amy at Oregon’s Bethel Heights, Rex Hill and The Eyrie Vineyards and Burgundy’s Domaine de L’Arlot and Domaine Dujac; David at Oregon’s Adelsheim, Cameron and Burgundy’s Domaine Dujac). The two met while studying philosophy at Reed College in Portland and their philosophy of winemaking is nicely summed up in their tag line: “Texture and terroir amidst post-industrial splendor.”
Initially Westrey owned no vineyards but sourced grapes from some of Oregon’s top vineyards including Croft, Abbey Ridge, Bethel Heights, Temperance Hill, Anderson Family and Laurel Hood. Amy and David farm 22 acres of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay at Oracle Vineyard, planted between 1977 and 2008, on their 50-acre parcel of land in the Dundee Hills. They named their vineyard Oracle our of reverence for the importance of "consulting the land first" when making decisions in the winery. The vineyard is adjacent Abbey Ridge Vineyard planted in 1977 by Bill and Julia Wayne, a fortuitous situation for they have worked with Abbey Ridge Vineyard fruit for several years.
Starting with 400 cases in 1993, Westrey currently produces around 3,200 cases in a small winery in McMinnville, with a goal of reaching 6,000 to 8,000 cases over the next ten years. In their winemaking, new oak is kept to a minimum for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. The Alsatian-inspired Pinot Gris sees no oak or MLF. Their style is a departure from many Oregon producers with their emphasis on structure, balance, elegance, texture and aging potential. To that end, their wines tend to have higher acidity, a nod to their Burgundian training.

Moderately dark
reddish purple color in the glass. Brooding aromas of darker raspberry fruit, smoke and tobacco lead off. Fairly
bold and concentrated, with flavors of oak-kissed black cherry and a subtle petrol note. Nicely balanced with a
sweet cherry and exotically spiced finish. This wine needs more time to integrate the oak, but the potential is
obvious.

Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. The
nose unravels slowly to reveal aromas of red cherry,
underbrush, and baking spice. The mid-weight core of dark red
cherry, ripe strawberry, and raspberry fruits are backed by
forthright energy. The fruit gifts build in intensity over time in the
glass. Silky in texture, with moderate sandy tannins in the
background and a noticeably long finish. Impressive freshness
for an 8-year-old wine. Even more delectable when tasted the
following day from a previously opened bottle. Easily a 15-year
wine.

the glass. Nicely scented with aromas of fresh red cherry and red rose petal. Light to mid-weight in style,
offering lean flavors of red cherry and berry with a hint of greenness. The tannin spine sticks out a bit and
some oak surfaces over time in the glass. Drink up.

Moderate reddish purple color in the
glass. A little more oak than fruit on the nose now and a bit tight, offering aromas of black cherry,
fennel, pine and smoky oak. A well-crafted, beautiful wine but the fruit flavors of dark cherry,
blackberry and plum have not fully emerged. Well-structured and mid to full-bodied with a big fruit-driven
finish. Soft and plush, but not overly fat on the palate. Give this wine at least another year in
bottle for full enjoyment.

clone Oracle Estate Vineyard. Unfiltered.

Moderate reddish purple color
in the glass. Somewhat reticent, offering demure aromas of dark red
berries, cherries and sous-bois. Delicious flavors of dark red fruits with
the slightest oak adding a welcome accent. Fresh and juicy with good
tension, balanced tannins, an intense mid palate attack, and a generous
finish displaying a good cut of acidity. Tasted the following day from a
previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine was more savory and
slightly gamey with a remarkably long finish. This wine should age
effortlessly.
Score: 91-92.

Moderate garnet color in the glass. Pleasant aromas of peppery herbs and lean cherry. Aciddriven
flavors of cherry and black raspberry satisfy but the backing tannins are outlasting the fruit and
noticeably bold. Plush in mouthfeel with sustaining fruit on the finish. Drink up.

2010 Westrey Abbey Ridge Vineyard Dundee Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. The nose has a briar, dried oak and geranium theme with a
delicate cherry fruit aroma. Much more appealing on the palate with flavors of red cherry, rhubarb and oak.
Very elegant, with gossamer tannins, tangy acidity and a faint dried herb streak in the background. The oak
tends to overshadow the fruit. This bottle is not up to the usual high standard of Westrey wines from this
vineyard.

Vineyard. 76% primarily Dijon 777 with small percentages of five other Dijon clones and 24% 32-
year-old Pommard clone. Indigenous yeast fermentation. Aged in 20% new French oak barrels.
Unfined and unfiltered.

Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Very fresh aromas of black
raspberries and boysenberries with a hint of Asian 5-spice. Delicious dark red cherry and dark berry
flavors with a forest tone. Gripping tannins dwarf the fruit initially, but the flavors gain intensity and interest over
time in the glass. Like the other two Westrey vineyard-designates, this wine displays a lavish and persistent
finish. Not extremely approachable now and will benefit from further bottle aging. Very good (+).

perfume of fresh dark raspberry glaze with a lovely rose petal
garnish. Vivid, discreetly concentrated core of an array of spicy berry fruits
supported by ripe, well-integrated tannins, finishing with a long and graceful
finish. More body and spice than Victoria’s Secret runway.

Lovely nose featuring dark red raspberries, ripe cherries and dried

hard cherry candy. Moderately light and soft on the palate with cherry
notes persisting on the finish which features bright acidity. Can drink now, but
like so many Oregon 08 Pinots, has the structure to age. Good (+).

structure and acidity to go the distance. Hold this wine in your cellar while you
drink the Willamette Valley bottling. Very good.

Beautifully composed scents of fresh cherries, strawberries and Asian spice.
Tasty berry core highlighting cranberry with the slightest spice accent. Delicate
and bordering on dilute, but packing a wallop of flavor. Supple tannins, zippy
acidity, and perfectly adapted for the dinner table. Very good.

Wesselman and David Autrey craft small lots of Pinot Noir from purchased
grapes and their estate Oracle Vineyard in the Dundee Hills. Their wines
tend to be lighter and more restrained, are built for aging and are very
sensibly priced.

Shy but pleasant aromas of red fruits and Provencal
herbs. The red fruit theme carries over in the delicate flavors which include a
judicious touch of spice. Juicy and crisp with supple tannins.

shy but quite charming featuring red Pinot fruits. On the palate, there is a panoply
of red fruits including cranberry, pomegranate and raspberry enhanced

2005 Westrey Reserve Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

The finest barrels from each lot blended into a limited cuvee. Similar to the
Oracle Vineyard bottling but richer and more reticent. Aromas of cherries,
herbs, hay and oak build in intensity with time in the glass. The fruits are
dark and substantial but the wine retains admirable finesse. There are still
some tannins to shed but when this one reaches its apex in a few years, it
will be one heck of a celebration.

13.5% alc., $25. · Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. Demure aromas of darker fruits with a hint of oak. Rich, silky and comforting on the palate with darker fruits grabbing the limelight. Not as expressive as would like with a little stem note. Impressive fruit core with the tannic structure and acidity to go the distance. Hold this wine in your cellar while you drink the Willamette Valley bottling. Very good. 13.5% alc., 4 cases, auction item, not for sale. · I love this nose! Beautifully composed scents of fresh cherries, strawberries and Asian spice. Tasty berry core highlighting cranberry with the slightest spice accent. Delicate and bordering on dilute, but packing a wallop of flavor. 13.5% alc., $22. Amy Wesselman and David Autrey craft small lots of Pinot Noir from purchased grapes and their estate Oracle Vineyard in the Dundee Hills. Their wines tend to be lighter and more restrained, are built for aging and are very sensibly priced. · Shy but pleasant aromas of red fruits and Provencal herbs. 2006 Westrey Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
13.5% alc., $18. · The nose is shy but quite charming featuring red Pinot fruits. On the palate, there is a panoply of red fruits including cranberry, pomegranate and raspberry enhanced with a subtle oak flourish. 13.5% alc., $36. · This seemed to be an off bottle and not consistent with other Westrey offerings this vintage. The nose offered cranberry, orange peel and a hint of volatile acidity. 2005 Westrey Reserve Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
13.5% alc., $30. · The finest barrels from each lot blended into a limited cuvee. Similar to the Oracle Vineyard bottling but richer and more reticent. Aromas of cherries, herbs, hay and oak build in intensity with time in the glass. The fruits are dark and substantial but the wine retains admirable finesse.
