Founded by the Speck family in 1988, this winery is located in the Short Hills Bench along the Niagara Escarpment. The land was first deed to the Speck's ancestor, Nicholas Smith and his youngest son Henry built an Inn and planted vineyards along Pelham Road. When signing for the liquor license, he chose the moniker Henry of Pelham in reference to the British Prime Minister, Sir Henry of Pelham. The name stuck. Two centuries later, the Speck brothers spent weekends and summers clearing the land of Henry's original vineyards and replaced it with modern grape varieties. The vineyards are sustainably farmed.

Henry of Pelham is one of a very few estate wineries to produce wine made from 100% Ontario grown grapes including Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon. Three Pinot Noirs are produced including a Reserve and a Speck Family Reserve.

2007 Henry of Pelham Family Estate Ontario Canada Pinot Noir

13.0% alc., $17. Imported by Beck Wines & Spirits, San Francisco, CA. · Moderately deep reddish-purple color in the glass. Starts out with marked sulfur notes of rotten eggs, obscuring the underlying aromas of dark fruits, pine tar and oak char. Robust black cherry fruit with an underlying earthy note, wrapped in flamboyant sandy tannins. Seems over-sulfured. Unsatisfactory. This winery was a featured winery at this year’s IPNC, so I suspect this was not a representative bottle. Reviewed August 24, 2010 ARTICLE »
