David K. Selby, M.D. founded Selby Winery with his daughter Susie Selby. The first vintage produced 150 cases of Chardonnay in 1993. David passed away in 1997 and Susie has carried as the proprietor and winemaker.
A Russian River Valley Pinot Noir is produced from Love Vineyard and Calegari Vineyard. In the 2008 vintage, a vineyard-designate was crafted from Calegari Vineyard, one of my favorite wines at the 2010 Pinot Cup as part of the Pigs & Pinot event in Healdsburg.
The wines are available through the online store. A wide range of varietal wines are produced in addition to Pinot Noir. A quaint tasting room at 215 Center Street in Healdsburg is open daily 11:00 to 5:00.
2007 Selby Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.7% alc., 579 cases, $27.69, released June 2010. Crafted by Susie Selby. 55% Love Vineyard, 45% Calegari Vineyard. Aged 15 months in 35% new French oak. · Moderately light purple color with a reddish rim. A nicely composed wine with very attractive perfume of Bing cherries, strawberries, baking spices and fresh pastry. Red-fruit-driven with a charming cherry kiss on the lingering finish. Elegant, with enough fruit, acid and tannin to take on the alcohol. Very typical Russian River Valley Pinot Noir. One of my favs at last year’s Pigs & Pinot event. Very good.
