The winemaker behind Hundred Acre and Layer Cake, Jayson Woodbridge, has joined the crusade for the perfect Pinot Noir beginning with the 2007 vintage. Two Pinot Noirs are offered: a Stanly Ranch Carneros vineyard- designated wine and a Sonoma Coast wine whimsically sourced from Huckleberry Snodgrass Vineyard. Woodbridge sources fruit from the very best blocks at Stanly Ranch.
In 2008, while visiting New York's Soho District, Woodbridge happened into the Campton Gallery while the paintings of artist TR Colletta were on exhibition. Woodbridge was drawn to an oil on canvas painting of a juicy, mouthwatering hot-out-of-the-oven cherry pie. He knew right away that this was to be the label and the name for his Pinot Noir which was still in barrel.
A value-priced label, Cherry Tart ($20), with a California designation, is also offered. He also produces a Central Coast Pinot Noir under the Layer Cake label ($15).

2012 Cherry Tart California Pinot Noir
14.3% alc., $20, screwcap. Vinified by Jason Woodbridge (Hundred
Acre, Layer Cake and Cherry Pie). 49% Sonoma County, 43% Monterey County and 8% Santa Barbara
County. Aged in 3-year-old French oak with a small portion of new oak (barrels recycled from Hundred Acre
and Cherry Pie program). First vintage of this wine.

Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. The
nose is smoky with underlying aromas of black cherry, burnt toast and black tea. The black cherry, black
raspberry and black currant flavors deliver plenty of Pinot goodness. A mantle of smoky oak shadows the fruit.
The tannins are well balanced and the wine finishes with some appealing black cherry fruit.
Score: 88.

2009 Cherry Pie Stanly Ranch Vineyard Carneros Pinot Noir

Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. The wine is cherry
centric which, given the name, is no surprise. Flavors of crushed cherries,
spice, sassafras and sandalwood in a medium to full-bodied style with
complimentary oak and good staying power on the finish. Structurally firm but
proportional to the fruit extract creating an overall impression of balance. Packs
a little heat on the finish as it warms in the glass. Good.

Great label.

Very shy fruit on the nose with prominent scents of oak, pine pitch
and varnish. Hearty and full-flavored with copious amounts of black cherry and
black raspberry essence set off by brown spice and oak. Generous and fruity
rather than classy or complex. The flavors clearly trump the aromas at this
stage. Good.

Beautifully scented black
raspberry, Bing cherry fruit augmented with oak and spice. Juicy and succulent
red cherries fill the mid palate leading to a dry and lingering finish highlighted by
subtle oak char. The tannins are fine-grained and the overall impression is
seductive. Very good.
