One of Martinborough's founding vineyards established in 1984 and one of the first New Zealand producers to send their Pinot Noirs to the U.S.. The Maori name means, "Land where the soil is rich and the food plentiful." 250 acres of vineyards are either owned or leased.
Three Pinot Noirs are produced: An Estate, a Runholder, and a John Martin Reserve. Chardonnay, Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc are also produced. The wines are distributed internationally. Production is 70,000 cases annually.
The winery was acquired by Foley Family Wines in 2011.

1995 Te Kairanga New Zealand Pinot Noir
13.0% alc., $17. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels. Perfectly cellared by me since release.

The wine has an orange tinge to the rim in the glass. The nose reveals orange peel, forest floor and demure sherry aromas. Very light in fruit flavors with notes of sandalwood and oak. The fruit has faded, but tannins persist on the finish. Nothing to get excited about, but still very drinkable.
