Sir Clifford Skeggs purchased the property at Akarua in 1995 with planting commencing the following year. Today, Akarua is the largest family owned single vineyard and winery in Central Otago. David Skeggs, the current proprietor, took over management of the winery in 2008 and a new winemaker, Matt Connell, was appointed.
The 125 acre vineyard is planted 70% to Pinot Noir with lesser amounts of Chardonnay, Pinot Gris and Riesling. Pinot Noir clones include UCD 5, UCD 6, UCD 13, UCD 10/5, and Dijon clones 115, 777 and 114.
Three Pinot Noirs are offered: Rua (value-priced), Akarua, and Akarua Reserve.
2002 Akaura The Gullies Bannockburn Central Otago Pinot Noir
14.5% alc., $32, screw cap. The entry level wine in the lineup. · Luscious dark cherries, strawberries and wild flowers dominate the nose. Plenty of plump, sweet fruit on the palate that, simply put, tasted great. The fruit literally exploded on the mid palate. This bigger styled wine finishes with noticeable alcohol and tannins.
