Denis Marshall purchased land in the Gibbston Valley of Central Otago on which 12.5 acres of Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris are now planted, creating the Hawkshead Vineyard. Early on the grapes were sold, eventually establishing the Hawkshead label. Most of the production is from the estate vineyard supplemented by grower's fruit and the wine is made at Gibbston Valley.
