Ben Papapietro was born and raised in San Francisco and grew up in a family of home winemakers and wine lovers. His grandparents on his father's side made wine in the Mission District during Prohibition into the late 1950s. His mother's cousin owned Cribrari Winery in San Jose. Wine was always included in family dinners and even the children drank watered down versions.
He developed a passion for Pinot Noir early on after tasting a number of Burgundies from the mid-1950s. Ben began making wine at home and fortuitously struck up a friendship with Burt Williams of Williams Selyem fame while both were working at the San Francisco Newspaper Agency. In the 1970s, Ben was helping Burt make his homemade garage wine and he continued to work each harvest at Williams Selyem after the winery was started in the early 1980s.
Bruce Perry started working at the San Francisco Newspaper Agency in 1985 and drank some of Ben's wines. He joined Ben in his home winemaking endeavour and the friends made wine together for 13 years. Upon the urgings of family and friends, they started Papapietro Perry in 1998 with an initial release of 75 cases of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir.
Today Papapietro Perry produces 8,000 cases of well-regarded small lots of single-vineyard and clonal-designate Pinot Noir, Zinfandel and Chardonnay from prime vineyards on the Sonoma Coast and in the Russian River and Anderson Valleys.
Papapietro Perry wines are available through retail channels and on the website. A tasting room is open daily from 11-4:30 at 4791 Dry Creek Road in Healdsburg. The phone is 707-433-0422.

777. Harvest Brix 23.9º. 2-3 day cold soak, several inoculated yeasts cultured specifically for Pinot Noir. Aged
at least 11 months in Francois Frères French oak barrels, 40% new, 40% 1-year-old and 20% 2-year-old.

Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of cherry, rose petal and pine sap lead to a discreetly
concentrated core of red cherry, cranberry and pomegranate fruit flavors accented with plenty of spice and a
thread of oak in the background. The wine is fueled with citrus-driven acidity that is evident on the slightly tart
finish.

The nose leads with oak-kissed cherry aromas. Soft and smooth, even slightly creamy on the palate with
forward flavors of cherry and raspberry accented with notes of vanilla and baking spice. Very supple tannins
and balanced acidity make for armchair drinking.

vineyard is located at a relatively warm site just off the 101 Freeway east of the Santa Rosa airport.

flavor really pops on the palate with endearing spice notes. Tastes of blueberry and raspberry add interest.
Very suave in the mouth, with fine grain tannins, and a huge, fruit-driven finish.

Moderate light cherry red color in the glass. A very savory
nose featuring aromas of forest floor, conifer and herbs with a hint of
strawberries and spice. More fruity on the palate, with mid weight,
attacking flavors of cherry and red berries with a subtle savory thread in
the background. The wine has great purity of cherry flavor that really
clings to the palate. Easy to like, with suave tannins and good finishing
length.

Fruit flavors veer to the ripe side but remain in tune. Silky and charming with

of Sebastopol on the edge of the newly expanded Russian River Valley
appellation. Aged 11 months in 50% new and 50% 1 and 2-year old French oak.

Nicely perfumed with oak-scented dark red berries and cherries, a roseate note,
and hints of anise and smoke. Considerable flavor impact on entry, lingering on
the fruity finish. Tasty spiced cherry and berry fruit underlain with restrained
oak, and enrobed in restrained fruit tannins creating a welcoming elegance and
silky texture. This wine has interest beyond the fruit. Very good (+).

intensity with time in the glass, showing accents of vanillin and oak.
Luscious and vivid black cherry and black raspberry fruit that really makes an
impression. The most intensely flavored wine in the lineup, but also nuanced
with contributing flavors of cola, spice, confection and vanilla. A fantastic match
with lamb. Clearly the star of this vintage.

Barrymore, very successful at a young age.

wine isn’t ready to drink. The nose is quite austere, displaying reluctant aromas of red fruits and herbs. A bit
awkward and closed, there is a luscious berry core lurking in the background but it is drowned out by healthy
dry tannins and a citrus tang that carries the finish. Definite potential here, but currently zippered up.

about 20 clones on multiple rootstocks. Farmed by Chuck Elsbree.

A very
complex and alluring nose displaying red plum and red current fruit with a
sniff of cactus flower, roasted nuts, herbs and oak vanillin. A demure wine
that is packed with flavors of spiced stone fruits and berries. Youthful
tannins are evident and there is good grip, even a slight tartness to the
refreshing and lingering finish. Still not showing all of its charms. I really like this
wine and salute its uniqueness.

This wine
smells of the forest with oak and floral highlights. Juicy strawberry, cranberry and cherry fruit flavors. Herbs,
oak and toast are evident but subtle. The fruit is pulled into line by a spark of acidity. Hi-toned, elegant and
very satisfying.

Tom Mukaida. He originally was an apple grower who switched to farming
Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the 1980s. He sold his grapes to Gallo for
several years. Composed of Pommard and Dijon 777 clones.

This wine is
a real showoff. Very bright cherry fruit, even sensual, with a spicy touch of
oak in the background. Plush and mouth filling attack of raspberry and cherry fruit
with added flavors of savory herbs and baking spices. Perfectly harmonious with
lithe tannins, this beautiful wine seduces with its smoothness and silkiness. You
will need a cold shower after drinking this one.

Provencal herbs draw you in. Good concentration of layered berries and rustic cherries with a touch of brown
spice. A vein of acidity runs through creating a slight tartness and a grapefruit tang on the finish. A wine

admirable balance. Picks up interest with time in the glass. Close to the 2007 vintage in character.

Considerable flavor impact on entry, lingering on the fruity finish. Tasty spiced cherry and berry fruit underlain with restrained oak, and enrobed in restrained fruit tannins creating a welcoming elegance and silky texture. This wine has interest beyond the fruit. Luscious and vivid black cherry and black raspberry fruit that really makes an impression. The most intensely flavored wine in the lineup, but also nuanced with contributing flavors of cola, spice, confection and vanilla. A fantastic match with lamb. Clearly the star of this vintage. Farmed by Chuck Elsbree. · A very complex and alluring nose displaying red plum and red current fruit with a sniff of cactus flower, roasted nuts, herbs and oak vanillin. A demure wine that is packed with flavors of spiced stone fruits and berries. Youthful tannins are evident and there is good grip, even a slight tartness to the refreshing and lingering finish. Very bright cherry fruit, even sensual, with a spicy touch of oak in the background. Plush and mouth filling attack of raspberry and cherry fruit with added flavors of savory herbs and baking spices.
