Shane Finley left New York City in the summer of 2001 to work as a harvest intern at Copain Wines in Santa Rosa, California. He then worked harvest in Australia and France's Northern Rhone and Roussillon. Upon returning to California, he resumed work at Copain as custom crush Cellar Master. In 2005, he became Assistant Winemaker at Paul Hobbs Winery, joining Kosta Browne the following year as Associate Winemaker. Subsequently, he wss the winemaker at Lynmar Estate.
Shane now devoted most of his efforts to Shane Wine Cellars, his personal label concentrating on red wines including Pinot Noir and Syrah. The wines are sold through a mailing list.

2012 Shane La Reine Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.1% alc., $42. Petaluma gap fruit including
clones 115, 777, “828,” and Swan.

Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Somewhat
brooding, revealing itself slowly in the glass. Dense and sappy dark berry fruits flood the nose and
palate. Some earthy mushroom and peppery spice add interest. Almost like Syrah in fruit liquor
richness, with firm, grippy tannins. Lacks finishing length. Needs more time in bottle to reach full
expression.

2012 Shane The Charm Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.3% alc., $42. Primarily sourced from
Floodgate Vineyard. Clones 667 and Martini. 20% whole cluster, aged 15 in 20% new French oak.

Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Lovely nose redolent of fresh Bing cherry and strawberry
shortcake. Polished and seductive, with a mid weight core of nicely ripened cherry fruit caressed by
modest tannins. A touch of spice and cola adds interest. Tasted later in the day, the wine had further
blossomed and sported an engaging, long finish.
Score: 91.

3.56, TA 0.63, 250 cases, $45. Third issue of this wine sourced from vineyards
managed by Ulises Valdez. Winemaker Shane Finley was former assistant
winemaker at Kosta Browne. Clones are 777, Pommard, Calera and Swan.
Aged 14 months in 30% new French oak barrels.

Moderately dark reddish
purple color in the glass. Quite aromatic with bright aromas of black cherry,
raspberry and Moroccan spices. Mid weight flavors of black cherry,
pomegranate and spice with a riff of oak in the background. Soft and seamless,
with balanced tannins. An upfront wine of immediate appeal. Impressive in this
challenging vintage.

Moderately dark reddish-purple
color in the glass. Lovely aromas of fresh Bing cherries with a
touch of exotic spices. Moderately rich core of perfectly ripened black
cherries with complimentary hints of cola, edible flower, earth and oak
in the background. The very long and intensely fruity finish lasts at
least 30 seconds. Very forward and charming as the name would imply. I really
enjoyed drinking this marvelous example of Russian River Valley Pinot Noir.

Deep, dark reddishpurple
color in the glass. Slightly reduced initially, evolving to reveal shy aromas of dark fruits, cut flowers and
smoky oak. Fat on the palate with a full load of plum and cassis flavor with a noticeable oak accent. Lacks
acidity, seemingly a bit flabby with a slight bitterness on the finish. Decent.
