Michael Meagher is one of the young turks crafting wine from vineyards in Santa Barbara County. His first release in 2004 consisted of 200 cases. These are boutique wines crafted with love. As Michael says, “All wines are truly made by hand employing only the laws of gravity (and good beer) for moving and bottled by a group of friends and relatives. Meagher's Pinot Noir is sourced from Solomon Hills Vineyard in Santa Maria Valley.

2005 Vino V White Hawk Vineyard Santa Barbara County Syrah

Similar to
the 2004 vintage but shows more immaturity. Complex aromas of black fruits, ripe strawberries, oak and
a little barnyard. Blackberry fruit flavors with an oak sidecar. Moderately fine-grained fresh tannins, a
velveteen texture and a long, dry finish. Not as showy as the wine above but will match up nicely with
more time in the bottle.

14.5% alc., 120 cases, $28. 80% Syrah and 20%
Pinot Noir.

Dark ruby in color. Attractive scents of rich, dark fruits with cardamom and vanilla. A solid
fruit core with notes of anise and tar. A bit tangy and chippy on the finish. I am not usually a fan of blending
Pinot Noir with anything, but this is quite decent.

The aromas are a little funky and earthy with notes of wild red berries,
black cherry, hay, and oak. Soft red fruit and green tea flavors finish with tangy raspberry notes. Alcohol
peaks out on the nose and finish.

2004 Vino V Wines Confundido Santa Barbara County Red Wine
14.5% alc., 50 cases. A blend of Grenache (50%) from Vogelzang Vineyard, Pinot Noir (25%) from Clos Pepe Vineyard, and Syrah (25%) from White Hawk Vineyard.

I don't have any reference point for this unusual blend but I can say it is well crafted. A little good barnyard shows up in the nose. Less fat on the palate than the other two 2004 vintage wines from Vino V. Finishes nicely with zingy fruit. Decent.

last year but really reaching its stride now. Estrella River clone of Syrah. 21 months in barrel
(33% new).

Deep, dark purple. Plumy, dark stone fruits with oak and exotic spices on the pleasing nose.
Plush dark fruits with well-integrated oak and soft, drying tannins. A very nice black raspberry kiss on the
finish. The healthy acidic backbone is refreshing. I like this.

2004 Vino V Wines Clos Pepe Vineyard Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir
15.0% alc., 70 cases, $43. Aged 19 months in 33% new French oak.

Clos Pepe grapes can produce decadent Pinot Noir and this one is no exception. Dark purple in color, this wine offers a plush nose of dark fruits, tea and earth with a hint of alcohol. A tasty and hedonistic style of Pinot Noir with layers of sweet fruit.

15.0% alc., 75 cases, $43. No this isn't a misprint, I do enjoy a good Syrah and the excellence here bears reporting. Aged 21 months in 33% new French oak.

This is one deep, dark mother. It leads off with a huge, rich nose of black fruit and tar. Beautiful dark, plumy fruit dances on the palate. The tannins are reeled in, and the massive structure is surprisingly velvety.
