Crown Point Vineyards is located in the Happy Canyon AVA in Santa Barbara County at the east end of the Santa Ynez Valley. Crown Point is a 103-acre estate, with a total of 45 acres planted by the summer of 2016. The owner, Roger Bower, works closely with all aspects of farming and winemaking.
Two estate wines are produced under the Crown Point label: a Cabernet Sauvignon and a proprietary red blend called Relevant. The inaugural vintage was 2013.
The sister label is Westerly, and the wines under this label are also made at the Crown Point estate winery. Westerly produces about 8,500 cases that include wines made from both Happy Canyon and Sta. Rita Hills AVAs. Westerly specializes in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay as well as other red varietals.
The winemaker is Adam Henkel who learned his trade at Swanson Vineyards, Merryvale Vineyards and Harlan Estate.
2010 Westerly Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., 304 cases, $45. Clones 777 and 667. Aged 12 months in a combination of new and 2-year-old French oak barrels. Winemaker Adam Henkel. · Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. Very fragrant with aromas of black cherries, black raspberries and red currants. Vivid cherry core that is well spiced and juicy, discreetly concentrated with balanced tannins and a fruit-driven finish. This is an enjoyable wine that delivers more than the price would suggest, and leaves behind a pleasant impression. Very good. Reviewed June 23, 2013 ARTICLE »
