Union Wine Company

Winemaker Ryan Harms has worked for a number of Oregon wineries in his career. In 2005, he founded Union Wine Company with the idea that he would not accept that wine made in Oregon had to be expensive. His mottos: "Simply Good Wines," and "Pinkies Down."

The labels include Kings Ridge, Alchemist, and Underwood, all reasonably priced versions of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris. Riesling is also available under the Kings Ridge label. The winery is known for Underwood Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris in a can.

The winery in Newberg is also home to several other producers including Beckham Estate.

NV Underwood Oregon Grown Pinot Gris

13.0% alc., 375 ml can, $6. · Pale yellow color and clear in the glass. Attractive aromas of pineapple, peach, papaya and a hint of juniper. The flavor profile is typical for Pinot Gris with tastes of white peach, pear, lemon and apple with a hint of nuttiness. The wine has good balance and acidity, held up well in the glass over time, and finished with a refreshing acidic tang. Score: 88. Reviewed October 6, 2014 ARTICLE »

NV Underwood Oregon Grown Pinot Noir

13.0% alc., 375 ml can, $6. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Highly aromatic upon opening with scents of cherry, raspberry and spice, but fading some over time in the glass with oak showing up. Soft in the mouth and easy to drink with delicate flavors of cherry, raspberry, cola and toast. A bit thin on the mid palate and short on the finish. An everyday, unpretentious style that achieves the producer’s goal. Score: 86. Reviewed October 6, 2014 ARTICLE »

2013 Underwood Oregon Pinot Noir

13.0% alc., $10. From Union Wine Co.. · Light cherry red color in the glass. Aromas of red cherry and potpourri hold up over time in the glass. Light to mid weight flavors of cherry, black raspberry, black tea and red licorice. An easy drinker with soft tannins that displays more than an ideal amount of oak overlay. Hard to complain at this price. Score: 86. Reviewed April 5, 2015 ARTICLE »

2013 Underwood Oregon Pinot Noir

13.0% alc., $10. Produced by Union Wine Co, in Newberg, Oregon. Also available in a 12 oz can. · Light cherry color in the glass. Aromas of red cherries and potpourri hold up nicely over time in the glass. Light to mid weight flavors of cherry, black raspberry and red licorice are framed by notes of oak and black tea, with the oak more prominent than I prefer. The tannins are mellow making the wine light on its feet. No need to contemplate this wine: just serve and chill out. A very good value. Score: 86. Reviewed May 14, 2015 ARTICLE »

2013 Underwood Oregon Grown Pinot Noir

13.0% alc., 750 ml bottle, screwcap, $12. · Moderately light reddish purple color and a tad darker than the wine from a can. Not as aromatic initially as the canned Pinot Noir, but picks up interest and intensity over time in the glass to surpass the canned version with scents of Bing cherry, mocha and baking spice. Light to mid weight cherry-driven flavor with a hint of oak in the background. Elegant, with supple tannins and easy quaff ability. A bit shallow from attack to finish, but slightly more flavor and verve than the canned version. A simple wine that would enhance grilled salmon. Score: 87. Reviewed October 6, 2014 ARTICLE »
