Scratch is a project of winemaker Sabrine Rodems featuring small lots of Riesling, Grenache and Pinot Noir from the Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands AVAs. Rodems worked in the film and theater industry for many years before returning to school to earn a Master's of Science in Viticulture and Enology from University of California at Davis. For over ten years, Rodems has been crafting wines, and has been the winemaker for both the Wrath and Kori brands.
She launched her own label in 2011 to "push my limits, picking varietals I love and make them in styles that show them off."
A Pinot Noir is offered from Kirk Williams Ranch in the Santa Lucia Highlands.
The wines are sold through a mailing list ("scratch list").
2011 scratch KW Ranch Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir
14.2% alc., pH 3.71, TA 0.65, 35 cases, $45. Pommard 4 and 667 clones. 50% whole cluster. · Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. Highly scented with aromas of darker berries, savory spices, rose petal and forest floor. Soft and enticing on the palate with a vivid array of dark red cherry and berry flavors that are well spiced and carry over with aplomb on the extended finish. The impeccable balance and drink ability is striking. Tasted later in the day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine was even more appealing. My wife was gaga over this wine and she is more picky about Pinot Noir than I. Score: 95. Reviewed August 14, 2013 ARTICLE »
