Pax and Pam Mahle moved to wine country in 1997 to pursue careers in wine. Pax decided to start his own label a few years later and launched Pax Wine Cellars in 2000 specializing in Syrah. The wines were big, rich expressions of Syrah from cool climate vineyards in Sonoma County and Mendocino. Pax soon became one of California's premier produces of Syrah.
As success of the winery grew, there was a rift among the partners and in 2008, Pax Wine Cellars was dissolved and the Pax wine brand was put on hold for a few years while the Mahles focused on the new Wind Gap brand. Wind Gap was started as an outlet for esoteric varietals and wines that did not fit the Pax portfolio. Wind Gap became successful as well and brought in investors Charles and Ali Banks to help guide Wind Gap.
In 2014, Pax and Pam re-launched their eponymous label focusing on Syrah and Grenache.
