Archer Vineyard Estate

Owners Saj and Pauline Jivanjee have interesting backgrounds. Saj grew up in Mombasa, Kenya, and obtained an architect degree at Newcastle University in England. Pauline was raised in England where she was a social worker when she met and married Saj. After visiting relatives in Kansas, they decided to move to the United States. In 1990, Pauline accepted a teaching position with Portland State University and the Jivanjee family settled in Oregon where Saj opened his own architecture firm.

Owning a winery was never a life goal for the Jivanjees. Their son, Peter, happened upon a vineyard with 6.5-acres of grapes in the Chehalem Mountains, a house and barn and Saj bought the property. He replaced the existing home, revitalized the barn into a winemaking facility and built a tasting and event space.

Archer Vineyard was planted in 1989-1990 by the Archer family. The vineyard backs up to Corral Creek Vineyard and is just across the highway from Rex Hill Vineyards. The vineyard is planted in Laurelwoodc and Jory soils to 50% Pinot Noir (Pommard, Wädenswil, and 114, 115, 667 and 777) and 50% to Pinot Gris. The vineyard is managed by Angel Martinez of Advanced Vineyard Systems.

Winemaking is hands-on by the owners with a production of 4,000 cases a year. Pinot Noir is produced from both estate and purchased grapes.

The tasting room at 32230 NE Old Parrett Mtn Rd in Newberg is open weekends from March through November, 11:00-5:00, and by appointment.
