Howard Mozeico started making wine in his garage in 1984. He became quite accomplished, garnering seven Gold Medals for his Pinot Noir in seven state home winemaking competitions. He was encouraged by friends and relatives to become a full-time winemaker and when his daughter, Jessica, agreed to assist him with the 2000 vintage, he began his commercial winemaking career. The name Et Fille (“a few”) was chosen, which in French means “and daughter.” Howard jokes, “Mozeico Et Fille” just wouldn’t work. His wines have been well reviewed and soon he plans to leave the software company he co-founded to devote himself entirely to Et Fille.
Howard’s goal is to craft small lots of distinctive single vineyard Pinot Noirs that reflect the unique character of each individual vineyard. No two of his wines are made exactly in the same fashion, and each wine is an expression of a specific Oregon terroir. He sources grapes from several prime vineyards including the well-known Maresh Vineyard.
The wines are vinified at August Cellars, a state-of-the-art gravity flow winery just off Highway 99W in Newberg. August Cellars was founded by Tom Schaad and is fashioned after the Carlton Winemaker’s Studio, which hosts ten wineries under one roof. At August Cellars, eight separately bonded wineries share space and equipment. Each winery has its own dedicated space for storing barrels during the blending and aging process. The facility opened in 2004.
Production at Et Fille is small, about 1,500 cases, and most of the wine is sold through a mailing list. The phone number is 503-449-5030. Tasting can be arranged by appointment.
Howard Mozeico died tragically in a tractor accident April 13, 2017. His daughter, Jessica, plans to carry the winery forward in the legacy and vision her father created.

Moderate garnet color in the
glass. A serious, sophisticated offering with aromas of cherry
leather, strawberry, Marionberry, oak spice, and sous-bois.
The discretely concentrated core speaks of well-ripened
Pommard-driven sap with Bing cherry, turmeric, and cola
flavors. Sleek in the mouth, with a compliment of tannins, a
shadow of oak, and a persistent finish. This admirable wine
has superb balance and is immensely satisfying.

12.1% alc., $28. A blend of several vineyards with
sedimentary, volcanic and loess soils. Pommard, Wädenswil and Dijon 777 clones.

Moderately light
garnet color in the glass. The scents of black cherry, pine and fertile earth lead to a middleweight
crafted wine featuring flavors of dark red berries and blueberries. The wine has satisfying length in the
mouth and finishes with juicy acidity.

located at a warmer site near Lenné Estate and has been a vineyard-designate for Et Fille since 2005.

varietal aromas of tropical fruits including ripe pineapple with a nutty, almond note. Satiny on the palate with
flavors of tropical citrus and honey, backed by a good cut of acidity. Good.

from four Willamette Valley vineyards. Aged 10 months in 25% new French oak.

Moderate reddishpurple
color in the glass. Aromas of black raspberries, black cherries, strawberries and oak. Soft
and smooth and moderately rich, with shy fruit expression, offering a citrus-peel and oak imbued
finish. Tasted 30 minutes later, the oak had become more integrated and the fruit had moved more to
the forefront. Needs decanting or time. Good (+).

live on the site and meticulously farm this vineyard.

Moderately deep reddish-purple color in the glass. Bright
and persistent aromas of fresh black raspberries, cherries, spice and vanilla cream. Wow! Juicy and crisp with
flavors echoing the nose. Appealing roundness with supple tannins, bright acidity, and a fruit-driven finish that
is soft and long. Impressive balance. Best wine ever from this vineyard for Et Fille. Very good (+).

Subdued, primary aromas of spice, violets, cut flowers
and mint. Some very alluring dark red cherry and berry fruit peeks out showing impressive grip, focus and
length. Still helter-skelter with fine-grain tannins to the front. All silk and satin on the palate. Like a new Louis
Vuitton purse: you need to break it in before showing it off. Will come around sooner than the 2008s, but
needs another year or two. Excellent the next day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Very good.

Moderately light reddish-purple hue in the glass.
Demure, but pleasing perfume of red and black berries, with hints of
smoky oak and tobacco. A young, but sophisticated wine, with a stunning
array of black cherry, red currant, and red plum flavors robed in immature
tannins. The pedigree of the fruit is obvious. Still showing some unintegrated
oak. A powerhouse that is impenetrable and not ready for prime time. Like a
new pair of Christian Louboutin shoes: able to attract plenty of attention.

Bright aromas of

This wine has really blossomed
since I tasted it last year. Demure red and black berry medley on
the nose echoed on the palate. Medium-bodied and discreetly
lush, the dark red berry flavors are wrapped in gossamer tannins
and set off by bright acidity. The texture is particularly alluring: all
silk and satin. Drinking perfectly now and one of the best 2008 Willamette
Valley blends you will find in the marketplace. Very good.

From the well-known Nicholas Vineyard farmed by Nick
and Sheila Nicholas. Pommard clone. Aged 10 months in
31% new French oak barrels.

Moderate reddish-purple
color in the glass. Beefy, husky and dark-fruited on the nose. Thick, broad
flavors of blueberries, black cherries, black raspberries and dark plums.
Tremendous concentration and grip, but retains an attractive feminine tone.
Perfectly balanced with a soft but ruffled texture in a worn leather jacket sort of
way. Impressive finishing persistence. Even better two days later from a
previously opened and re-corked bottle, indicating this wine will be an ideal cellar candidate. Everything you
want and some things you didn’t think to ask for in an Oregon Pinot at the right price.

Subdued but pleasing
darker stone fruit and berry aromas with a complimentary whiff of oak. Very tasty
essence of black cherries with a hint of vanillin oak. Mild dry tannins, exemplary
acid spine and a mouth filling presence. More rugged and intense than the
Maresh. Still a little closed and will need cellaring. Very good (+).

The nose is currently closed for business but the flavors say Wow! Mouth
coating core of strawberry and black cherry fruit makes you sit up to attention, keeping you interested through
the soft, intensely fruity and refreshing finish. Showing very little leg now, and only hinting at its future
greatness. Note: some of the Oregon 2008 Pinots are closing up now and this is a perfect example. Cellar
this wine for a few years and then enjoy over the next five to ten years. Very good (+).

Green. Wädenswil, 113 and 114. Aged 10 months in 33% new French oak barrels.

A distinctive wine that
reflects its Yamhill-Carlton roots. The nose is a challenge to describe but a pleasure to experience with aromas
of exotically spiced stone fruits, fig, fruit bin and a hint of pine. Intensely flavored and big-boned dark fruit with
undertones of earth and cola, yet silky and light on its feet with a huge, supple finish. Generous tannins should
soften over time, but this will always be a tannic wine. Pair with protein like some rare prime rib. This wine is
like a tatted biker girl: rugged but very appealing in black leather. Cellar this one. Very good.

$42. Pommard clone grown at one of the oldest vineyards in the Dundee Hills.
Aged 9 months in 40% new oak.

Beautiful perfume of cherries, berry jam, spice
box and floral scents. The palate is not as forward as the nose but opens over
time in the glass revealing dark red and blue fruits that are crisp and juicy. The
tannins are supple and the acidity is vibrant. Still closed and not imposing yet,
but the pedigree of the fruit shows through in the persistent finish, and this will be
a terrific wine in a couple of years. Very good (+).

scents of dark red cherries and red plums, red roses and a hint of oak.
Delicious dark cherry bombast with accents of spice, brioche, pepper and
toast. The tannins are gossamer and the cherry aromas linger endlessly on the
teasing finish. This beauty has a gentle richness that is very sensual.

Maresh in the Dundee Hills more than thirty years ago. Pommard clone. Aged 9
months in 39% new French oak.

Decanted before tasting. Lovely deep cherry
aromas show great purity. A touch of alcohol peeks out on the nose. Modest in
power but delivering plenty of juicy red cherries and berries that are nicely
complimented by Asian spices. Very smooth and elegant, building in intensity with
time in the glass. This wine may ultimately top the Kalita. If you drink it now, spend
some time with it.

Maresh Vineyard. Sourced from a 1971 planting by Jim Maresh (Block 1) of Wädenswil. Aged 9 months in
50% new French oak.

Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Delicate, but pleasing aromas of red
cherries and berries, dried rose petals and sandalwood. Light and graceful on the palate, with savory red fruit
flavors and a hint of complimentary oak. A relatively austere wine styled in the Burgundian tradition.

Some barnyard blows off quickly to reveal lovely
scents of black cherry. There is an appealing and glass-filling presence
of sweet strawberry, raspberry and cherry fruit with some underpinnings
of earth and spice. The finish is pleasant but short. A great everyday
Pinot and quite good for an appellation blend. Jessica Mozeico says,
“Like Cameron Diaz - fun, spirited and more attractive than the girl next
door.”

The nose is alive with red cherry, ripe strawberry and allspice. Plenty of tangy
red berries are front and center with a touch of mushroom and forest floor. Light, elegant, feminine and simple,
but immensely satisfying, with silky tannins and a lively and refreshing finish. I am not a fan of single Dijon
clone wines, but this one is just fine. Jessica Mozeico says, “Like cruising down the road in a convertible on a
sunny afternoon - expansive, freeing and undemanding.”

A strikingly fragrant start with a blast of ripe cherry and
raspberry fruit that makes you sit up and take notice. This is the most sturdy wine of the 2006 lineup
marked by cherry fruit that comes in waves and makes a statement. Despite its heft, the fruit is
discreetly concentrated and the wine retains that Pinot charm. The texture is all silk and satin, the
tannins are imperceptible, and the tangy finish sends you reaching for more. A complete wine that is
brilliantly crafted. Jessica Mozeico says, “Dad says our 2006 Kalita has the power of Yankee player Alex
Rodriguez, but I think it is like Big Papi David Ortiz of the Red Sox.”

Light crimson
in color. The cherry fruit in the nose is highlighted by the smell of a field of wildflowers, grasses and sage.
Very elegant and feminine with demure raspberry and pomegranate fruit with a touch of grassiness.
Gossamer tannins and lively acidity. Not flamboyant at all and will never win any beauty contests, but a wine
that is nice to come home to.

This one speaks of the soil on the nose with an aromatic
combination of wet new wood, earth, barnyard, wild berries and Pinot must. Mouth-filling and lush red
strawberries and Bing cherries are enhanced by baking spices and a touch of tobacco. No tannin in sight.
Plenty of finesse and a stylish effort through and through. Jessica Mozeico says, “This is smooth luxury - like
the curved lines of a Jaguar.”

wine that is not terribly complex, but nicely balanced and beautifully composed. It is a red-fruit driven

$32. This 10 acre vineyard was planted in 1999 to Pommard and Dijon clones 113,114,115 and 777.
The wine was aged for 10 months in 75% new French oak.

The perfume is exotic with spiced cherries,
mahogany, and cigar box most evident. The flavors are woodsy and earthy, with prominent mushroom
notes as well as red licorice highlights. At this stage, the aromas trump the flavors, but this filly (sic) hasn’t
gotten out of the gate yet.

This 22-acre vineyard is located near Shea Vineyard and
planted to Pommard and Wädenswil clones. The wine is aged
for 10 months in 50% new French oak.

A Pinot of noticeable
heft with a deep and complex nose of black cherries, black berries,
roses, and vanillin that attracts your attention. The texture
is soft and pillowy and the finish of ripe cherries and raspberry
tinged with mocha lingers. There is good acid to support the
prodigious fruit. A rose and a Baby Ruth.

2005 Et Fille Elton Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir
126 cases, $36. Elton Vineyard is a mature
vineyard planted in the 1980s and farmed by Dick and Betty O’Brien. Pommard clone. Aged for 10
months in 50% new oak. I tasted this at the winery as well as at home a couple of weeks prior.

There is
plenty of structure here but the wine is not jammy. The nose opens up with wild strawberries and buttered
toast. The complex flavors include dark cherries, red currents, wild berries, white pepper and
tobacco. The finish is clean and satisfying with tangy acidity. Cellaring will enhance this wine further.

2005 Et Fille Maresh Vineyard Dundee Hills Pinot Noir
13.5% alc., 125 cases, $38. Maresh Vineyard
has produced striking Pinot Noirs by Rex Hill Vineyards and others for over thirty years. Howard
is able to source Pommard clones from two blocks at Maresh. One block, the “Reservoir,” is the only
part of the vineyard still farmed by Jim Maresh, who originally planted the vineyard. Aged 10 months
in 100% new French oak.

The fruity and woodsy nose offers great interest. Plenty of dark cherries at its
heart, this beauty offers additional notes of baking spice, vanilla and shrooms. The long, long finish is
striking. Very nice balance here.

Howard just discovered a few
more cases of this wine and is offering it at $42.

This is stunning with a flamboyant nose of crushed and
spiced red berries that carries through to the finish. The tannins are velvety and the finish lingering. I
could still taste this wine in my memory a few hours later.

Some very alluring dark red cherry and berry fruit peeks out showing impressive grip, focus and length. Still helter-skelter with fine-grain tannins to the front. All silk and satin on the palate. Like a new Louis Vuitton purse: you need to break it in before showing it off. Will come around sooner than the 2008s, but needs another year or two. A young, but sophisticated wine, with a stunning array of black cherry, red currant, and red plum flavors robed in immature tannins. The pedigree of the fruit is obvious. Still showing some unintegrated oak. A powerhouse that is impenetrable and not ready for prime time. Like a new pair of Christian Louboutin shoes: able to attract plenty of attention. Medium-bodied and discreetly lush, the dark red berry flavors are wrapped in gossamer tannins and set off by bright acidity. The texture is particularly alluring: all silk and satin. Aged 10 months in 31% new French oak barrels. · Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. Beefy, husky and dark-fruited on the nose. Thick, broad flavors of blueberries, black cherries, black raspberries and dark plums. Tremendous concentration and grip, but retains an attractive feminine tone. Perfectly balanced with a soft but ruffled texture in a worn leather jacket sort of way. Impressive finishing persistence. Even better two days later from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, indicating this wine will be an ideal cellar candidate. Mild dry tannins, exemplary acid spine and a mouth filling presence. More rugged and intense than the Maresh. Still a little closed and will need cellaring. Very good (+). Mouth coating core of strawberry and black cherry fruit makes you sit up to attention, keeping you interested through the soft, intensely fruity and refreshing finish. Showing very little leg now, and only hinting at its future greatness. Note: some of the Oregon 2008 Pinots are closing up now and this is a perfect example. 13.0% alc., 149 cases, $42. Inaugural single-vineyard Pinot Noir from this site. The vineyard is owned by Mike and Patty Green. Wädenswil, 113 and 114. Aged 10 months in 33% new French oak barrels. · A distinctive wine that reflects its Yamhill-Carlton roots. The nose is a challenge to describe but a pleasure to experience with aromas of exotically spiced stone fruits, fig, fruit bin and a hint of pine. Intensely flavored and big-boned dark fruit with undertones of earth and cola, yet silky and light on its feet with a huge, supple finish. Generous tannins should soften over time, but this will always be a tannic wine. Pair with protein like some rare prime rib. Aged 9 months in 40% new oak. · Beautiful perfume of cherries, berry jam, spice box and floral scents. The palate is not as forward as the nose but opens over time in the glass revealing dark red and blue fruits that are crisp and juicy. The tannins are supple and the acidity is vibrant. Still closed and not imposing yet, but the pedigree of the fruit shows through in the persistent finish, and this will be a terrific wine in a couple of years. Very good (+). Modest in power but delivering plenty of juicy red cherries and berries that are nicely complimented by Asian spices. Very smooth and elegant, building in intensity with time in the glass. This is the most sturdy wine of the 2006 lineup marked by cherry fruit that comes in waves and makes a statement. Despite its heft, the fruit is discreetly concentrated and the wine retains that Pinot charm. The texture is all silk and satin, the tannins are imperceptible, and the tangy finish sends you reaching for more. A complete wine that is brilliantly crafted. The wine was aged for 10 months in 75% new French oak. · The perfume is exotic with spiced cherries, mahogany, and cigar box most evident. The flavors are woodsy and earthy, with prominent mushroom notes as well as red licorice highlights. 126 cases, $36. Elton Vineyard is a mature vineyard planted in the 1980s and farmed by Dick and Betty O’Brien. Pommard clone. Aged for 10 months in 50% new oak. I tasted this at the winery as well as at home a couple of weeks prior. · There is plenty of structure here but the wine is not jammy. The nose opens up with wild strawberries and buttered toast. The complex flavors include dark cherries, red currents, wild berries, white pepper and tobacco. The finish is clean and satisfying with tangy acidity. Cellaring will enhance this wine further. Howard is able to source Pommard clones from two blocks at Maresh. One block, the “Reservoir,” is the only part of the vineyard still farmed by Jim Maresh, who originally planted the vineyard. Aged 10 months in 100% new French oak. · The fruity and woodsy nose offers great interest.
