Spear Vineyards & Winery

This family owned winery has a certified organic vineyard located in the heart of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. Winemaker Ofer Shepher began his winemaking studies at UC Davis in 2004 and moved to the historic Gnesa Ranch in 2005. He spent the next seven years looking for an ideal location in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA to plant his dream vineyard and build a winery.

Spear Estate Vineyard was planted in 2014 along the Highway 246 corridor. The plantings are among the highest in the AVA at 900 feet above sea level. There are 34 acres planted to six grape varieties with a mix of clone, rootstock, orientation, elevation and soil combinations. The varieties include Pinot Noir (clones 2A, 115, 667, 777, 943, Pommard and Swan), Viognier, Chardonnay, Grüner Veltliner, Grenach, and Syrah. The vineyard is CCOF certified organic. Own-rooted Chardonnay comes from the estate Gnesa Vineyard, just west of the home ranch.
