2007 Lafond Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
14.5% alc., 2,800 cases, $20. · Deep, dark reddish-purple color. Attractive purity of black cherry fruit on the nose with a hint of smoke. Moderately rich and fruit driven with flavors of black cherries and plum and an edge of oak. Silky textured with soft tannins and a little heat on the finish. Loses appeal in the glass over time. 2006 Lafond Winery & Vineyards Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
13.8% alc., 3,544 cases. $19 ($26 at winery). 92% Lafond Vineyard, 8% Arita Hills Vineyard. 6 different Pinot Noir clones. Aged in 25% new French oak. The winemaker is Bruce McGuire. · Really charming aromatics featuring bright cherry, Indian spices and a hint of pepper building in intensity in the glass. The attack leads with a full-on charge of tart cherry fruit that is fresh and satisfying. The tannins are fine and supple and the finish leaves a lingering berry-toned aromatic impression. 2005 Lafond Vineyards Santa Rita Hills Pinot Noir
13.7% alc., 3,500 cases, $24. Lafond Winery & Vineyards is one of the Santa Rita Hills oldest wineries, established in 1972. The winery and tasting room is quite picturesque. · The aromas start out with barnyard and hay changing with time to a more mysterious composition of dark red fruits and anise. 2005 Lafond Vineyards Clone 777 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
14.7% alc., 164 cases, $38. · Clone 777 is considered a complete clone in the sense that it can often make a good wine on its own. This wine has the typical black fruit profile of 777 with nice integration of oak and alcohol. The finish shows a tangy acidic edge. Reviewed July 23, 2007 ARTICLE »
