14.8% alc., $60. Clones 667, 777, 115 and Pommard 4. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. The aromas are most vibrant upon opening, showing cherry, sweet pipe tobacco, and old leather. Agreeable midweight spiced cherry core with added notes of black tea and earth. Barrel fermented and aged 10 months in 25% new French oak. · Light golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Pleasant aromas of nutty lemon, peach, tropical fruits and toasty oak. Crisp and bright, and quite enjoyable, with flavors of lemon-lime, pear and white peach with a slight oak overlay, finishing with a burst of citrus-driven refreshment. Score: 89. 2013 Pali “Riviera” Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

14.5% alc., 4,479 cases, $22, screwcap. Sourced from Collins Ranch, Arrowhead and Champlain Creek vineyards. Aged 18 months in barrel, 30% new French oak. · Moderate reddish purple hue in the glass. The nose is quite earthy, offering clay-kissed aromas of blackberry jam and mushroom. On the palate, there is an assemblage of chunky dark fruits and added accents of black tea and anise. Very ripe fruited and robust, with structured tannins, modest vibrancy and a dry finish. Nothing speaks of Sonoma Coast character in this fruit-driven wine. Score: 87. The generous core of crushed cherry flavor is complimented by hints of Coca-Cola and spice. Somewhat jammy, with muscular fine-grain tannins that overwhelm the fruit. Score: 87. Expansive and juicy on the palate, with ripely flavored black cherry, black raspberry and blackberry fruits. Aged 12 months in barrel, 30% new French oak. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas of cherry reduction sauce, peat and oak lead to a mid weight styled wine offering black cherry and black raspberry flavors with noticeable oak seasoning. Barrel fermented and aged 12 months in 100% French oak barrels, 30% new, 70% neutral. · Light golden straw color in the glass. Fruit aromas of green apple and lemon are framed with a note of flinty minerality. On the palate, a good cut of acidity underlies a pleasing melange of apple and citrus flavors that have some length on the bright finish. 15.5% alc., 43 cases, $58. Bottled April 2015. Peter Cargasacchi farms this 16-acre vineyard located at the western edge of the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. Clone 115. Aged 16 months in 100% French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Plenty of bramble, earth and dried leaf complimenting the dark fruits and oak spice on the nose. Fullbodied attack of blackberry and black currant flavors that enter stronger than they finish. The wine has a woodsy, mushroom, rustic undertone, soft fine-grain tannins, integrated oak, and a fruit presence that builds over time in the glass. The nose is very savory, offering aromas of dried herbs, clay and oak. More savory herbs show up on the palate that displays somewhat closed fruit flavors of dark red berries, black plum, and boysenberry, married to oak-gifted notes of marzipan and toast. The gruff tannins stick out in this rustic wine which has a pleasing mid palate attack but a short finish that offers a bit of alcoholic warmth. May need time to rouse itself. Score: 87. Aged 16 months in 100% French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Like a walk in the forest, this wine’s nose is alive with the scents of earthy flora and timber. Rich entry, middle and finish with intense flavors of black cherry, blackberry and cola that coat the tongue. Silky, sleek and refined with deft balance between the slightly astringent tannins and acidity, with the tannins and alcohol supporting and not dominating the fruit. 15.1% alc., 627 cases, $58. Bottled April 2015. Vineyard dates to 1987, making it one of the oldest vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. Norm and Troudl Huber are the owners and caretakers. Aged 16 months in 100% French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Somewhat earthy and savory on the nose with scents of dark cherry and raspberry and a hint of spice. Plenty of sweet, lush and well-ripened dark red and black fruit sap is brewed with a compliment of earthy flora in this wine that sports balanced tannins and just a bit of inviting oak. Aged 16 months in 100% French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Fresh and lively aromas of cherry, strawberry, spice and sandalwood. A flirty wine with plenty of charming elegance that is easy to cozy up to, featuring mid weight juicy flavors of cherry and strawberry fruits framed by lacy tannins and a bright acid spine, finishing long and generous. The nose leads with very ripe berry flavors with hints of sassafras and sandalwood. Soft and velvety on the palate, with a charge of well-ripened dark red and purple fruits engulfing the mouth with richness, accented with generous oak that contributes toast, spice and dark chocolate highlights. The sleek texture is dreamy in this wine but the black fruit core is rather drab, linear and closed with a beefy, animale, unami character that can be typical of this vineyard. Modest in weight, with a core of earthy dark red and black berry fruits overlain with a prominent oak sheen. There are notes of stem and savory herbs that might be oak-driven. Seductively perfumed with scents of black cherry coulis, rose petal and wood cask. Mid to full-bodied array of spicy purple and black fruits with corralled tannins and lively acidity. Luscious, but vivid and soft in the mouth. This wine is very pretty for a Fiddlestix Pinot Noir. The finish is memorable for its length. Highly perfumed, featuring bright aromas of violets, black raspberries, ollaliberries and oak-driven notes of tobacco and vanillin. The full-flavored dark red and black fruits are long and expansive, and wrapped in gritty, husky tannins and bright acidity. The wine is a bit of a puzzle that has not been put together, but the pedigree of the fruit and the huge, racy finish indicate superb potential with further cellaring. Score: 92. Aromas of spiced black plums, blackberries, raisin and mulled wine with subtle oak char in the background. A big gulp of fruit: rich, dense and concentrated bordering on jammy with a hint of anise, iron and oak. Very smoothly textured on the palate with a moderate tannic backbone. On the lighter side, even a bit shallow on the attack, with red cherry and berry flavors lifted by bright acidity. The tannins tend to outweigh the fruit at present. Good. Earthy nose perfumed with scents of compost, dark stone and berry fruits and dark chocolate. Mid-weight flavors of black plums, blackberries and currants with a hint of oak-driven graham and dark chocolate notes. The pedigree of the fruit really shows through. Firmly structured, but pleasing to drink, leaving a bit of heat in its wake on the finish, especially as it warms in the glass. Still appealing the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Aged 16 months in 50% French oak barrels. · This is an upfront wine with plenty of charisma. Very charming aromatics featuring black cherries and berries, spice, toasty oak, and cut flowers. The fruit is hi-tone and travels like a laser beam to the nose although the aromatic intensity fades a bit over time in the glass. On the palate there is a rich and satisfying core of black raspberry, blackberry, plum sauce, cola and grilled mushroom flavors with oak harmonizing in the background. 14.1% alc., 220 cases, $50, released November 2008. This 4.5-acre vineyard is farmed by Carrie and Richard Boer. Richard is the current vineyard manager at Chalone. The Boer Family Vineyard was originally named the A-Frame Vineyard and was owned by Phil Woodward, one of the original founders of Chalone Vineyard, and was planted to Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyard was grafted over to Pinot Noir in 2006 using bud wood from favored blocks at Chalone Vineyard. The clones are 114, 115, 667 and Pommard 4. All of the Pinot Noir fruit from this vineyard is consigned to Pali Wine Co.. · Complex aromatic profile of dark cherries, herbs, char and forest floor. The red and black fruit is super ripe showing flavors of raisins, brown spice and root beer, but stopping short of a port, stewed taste. Multi faceted fruits have a rich, glass-filling presence. A hint of coffee and pepper adds interest. As is typical for this vineyard, plenty of tannin is noted, but the tannin is refined and velvety creating a sensual mouthfeel.
