Julius Wasem & Söhne
The Julius Wasem & Söhne estate is located in the town of Ingelheim (Bingen area) in the Rheinhessen wine-growing region in Germany. The Wasem family has been involved in wine production since 1726. In the 17th century, the buildings of the estate were the home of the aristocratic family Ritter Hundt von Saulheim and his wife Katharina (née von Rodenstein). Julius Wasem (1894-1972) laid the foundation fort he estate in its present form in 1912, when he set up the winery operation in the old aristocratic home in Ober-Ingelheim, and was the first producer in the region to bottle and market his own wines. He was also a board member of the German wine producers association (Deutscher Weinbau-Verband) and co-founder of the German wine seal for Rheinhessen (Deutsches Weinsiegel für Rheinhessen). He handed over the estate to his sons Gerhard and Jochen in 1963. Today the estate is run by their sons Holger and Burkhard Wasem, the third generation in line. A wine bar as well as a wine hotel are also provided, these are run by the wives of the brothers, Ilona and Karin Wasem. The vineyard area totals 34 hectares, with holdings in the following sites: Burgberg, Horn, Pares, Rheinhöhe, Schlossberg and Sonnenhang (Ingelheim), as well as Blume and Bockstein (Elsheim). Two thirds of the area is planted with the red varieties Pinot Noir (7,3 ha), Portugieser (7,1 ha), Pinot Madeleine (3 ha), St. Laurent (0,5 ha), Merlot (0,4 ha), Cabernet Sauvignon (0,4 ha) and Pinot Meunier (0,3 ha), the remaining third is planted with the white varieties Riesling (3,7 ha), Silvaner (3,7 ha), Dornfelder (1 ha), Müller-Thurgau (3 ha), Pinot Gris (1,3 ha), Pinot Blanc (0,7 ha) and Gewürztraminer (0,3 ha). The flavors trump the nose
here. Aromas of fermenting berries, citrus and grass lead to very light but attractive strawberry and
blackberry flavors with prominent herbal overtones. The texture is smooth and the ending quite soft. The
grassiness in the nose is reminiscent of Sauvignon Blanc.
