Located in Newberg, Oregon, this family-owned winery has a legendary history of fine Pinot Noir dating back to its founding in 1982. There have been a number of winemakers, but the wines have always been very good. In 2006, the founders retired, passing the winery to the two Oregon winemaking families of A to Z Wineworks.
Rex hill is one of the original particpants in Low Input Viticulture and Enology (LIVE) and has several wines labeled Oregon Certified Sustainable. The estate vineyards are dry farmed using biodynamic principals.
A tasting room is open daily at the winery. Located at the gateway to Oregon's Willamette Valley, the winery building dates to the 1920s. The old fruit and nut dryer has been converted to the winemaking facility and tasting room. The wines are sold on the website. There is a Willamette Valley blend, a Willamette Valley reserve, and a Dundee Hills blend.

Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. A fairly rich offering
with plenty of black cherry and dark berry goodness. Fruit-driven and
slightly sweet, with balanced tannins, a compliment of oak, and some
finishing intensity. More fruity than complex, this wine is a good one to
drink without contemplation.

sustainably grown grapes from every AVA in the Willamette Valley. Only the very best are selected from the
winery’s 75 Oregon A to Z contracted vineyards. Aged 14 months in French oak barrels, 28% new.

2009 Rex Hill Reserve Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

available at $34.99. The best fruit and ensuing wines from prized vineyard sources around Oregon’s
Willamette Valley (Jacob-Hart, Sims, La Colina and Roserock). Aged 11 months in French oak barrels.

Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Bright and fruity on the nose out of the gate offering aromas
of very ripe dark fruits. Middleweight core of black plum, black raspberry and blackberry flavors with a
complimentary hint of spice and oak. Silky on the palate with well-honed tannins and some length on the
finish. A fruit-driven wine that veers to over ripeness (especially evident the following day from a previously
opened and re-corked bottle), but will appeal to those who welcome this flavor profile. Good.

2007 Rex Hill Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
13.5% alc., $20. Rex Hill
is named after the steep slope at the northern entry to the Willamette
Valley. The winery is owned by a partnership consisting of Bill and
Debra Hatcher, Sam Tannahill and Cheryl Francis who are also partners
in A to Z Winewworks in Oregon. Aged in French oak barrels for 9-10
months.

A dark fruit hued wine that is rich and full-bodied. Black
cherries, blackberries and plums are accented by tea and toast flavors
wrapped around substantial tannins. These bold wine is atypical for the 2007 vintage
in Oregon but it will find plenty of fans.

2002 Rex Hill Carabella Vineyard Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

Actually my second
favorite of the tasting but not many tasters agreed. This wine had the whole package - five spice nose,
silky mouth feel, and a lasting finish of spice-tinged cherries and berries.

with spices and tea notes. The flavors disappoint, however, and there was a thin, short finish lacking in
acid.
