2018 Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

13.3% alc., $. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Intriguing aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, fresh-turned soil, and a hint of dark caramel. The purple grape, black raspberry and blackberry fruits have a striking presence in a middleweight style. The earthy underbelly adds a terroir note and it seems as if one can taste the soil where the vine grew. Silken in texture, with modest and balanced tannins and impressive ending fortitude. Approachable now but will be a long-term wine as indicated by its persistent excellence when tasted the following day from a previously opened bottle. Score: 95. 2018 Rhys Mt. Pajaro Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

13.8% alc., $79. · Still a very young wine with moderately vigorous tannins supporting a mid-weight plus core of purple and black fruits with an earthy undertone. 2015 Rhys Bearwallow Vineyard Anderson Valley Chardonnay

12.5% alc., $50 (500 ml). · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. A taut, acid-driven wine, leading off with aromas of apple, slate, lemon creme and a hint of spice. Flavors of lemon, grapefruit and kiwi are lifted by vivacious acidity, leading to a bright finish that offers both refreshing lift and satisfying fruit richness. Score: 92. 2015 Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

12.9% alc., $50 (500 ml). · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Soaring aromas of lemon curd, pineapple, marzipan, vanilla creme and steely resolve. Very bright acidity cuts through the lemon-lime, grapefruit, pear and white nectarine flavors like an arrow. 2015 Rhys Vineyards Bearwallow Vineyard Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

13.6% alc., $59. 23 acres situated at 300 to 600 feet elevation in the “deep end.” 10”-25” of topsoil over fractured shale, quartz and sandstone. Rhys selection massale and heritage clones. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Very shy aromas of black cherry, fertile earth and spice. More lushness, sap and finish than the Porcupine Hill bottling at this stage. Mid weight plus flavors of black cherry, black raspberry, and boysenberry backed by firm tannins that show up on the finish as slight astringency. More appealing when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle when the nose was quite earthy, yet the palate was alive with cherry fruit, with still noticeable tannins on the finish. 2015 Rhys Alpine Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

13.0% alc., $79. · Moderately dark golden yellow color in the glass. Slight reduction upon opening with added aromas of circus fruits, lychee and savory earth. A searching, somewhat austere wine that demands the drinker’s attention. Mid weight flavors of lemonlime, pear and white peach are well-balanced by bracing acidity. 2015 Rhys Alpine Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

13.0% alc., $79. Fall 2017 offering. 1.75- acre vineyard situated at 1230 to 1400 feet elevation and planted to Hyde, Wente and dijon clones. Soil is 12”-24” of topsoil over chalky, soft shale. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Leading off are aromas of lemon oil, poached golden apple, and marzipan. Appealing richness of flavor in an acid-driven style featuring flavors of citrus and green apple. Vibrant, with a acid-fueled minerality that carries through the soprano finish that offers good length. A little too citric and high-strung for my personal taste but an excellent wine. Score: 92. 2015 Rhys Vineyards Horseshoe Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

12.7% alc. $79. 17.5 acres planted in 2004 at 1360 to 1610 feet elevation. Top soils of 6”-20” over sedimentary rock and volcanic ash. Rhys selection and two heritage clones. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Aromas of oak come to the fore in the form of smoke and burnt tobacco. Mid weight flavors of dark cherry, boysenberry, tobacco and toast framed by gutsy tannins. The fruit shows good intensity but is currently swallowed up by the oak imprint and tannins. 2015 Rhys Vineyards Porcupine Hill Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

13.6% alc., $79. 3 acres of selection massale and heritage clones. High density vines planted at Bearwallow Vineyard. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Aromas of dark raspberry, cherry, turned earth, underbrush and spice lead off. More fruity on the palate, featuring mid weight flavors of cherry and raspberry with a bit of earthiness. Firm tannins show up as astringency on the juicy, cherry-driven finish. When tasted the following day from a previously opened and recorked bottle, the wine was softer in the mouth with delightful cherry fruit and less astringency. Score: 92. 2014 Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

12.7% alc. Rhys selection and two heritage clones. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. The nose is both fresh and uplifting and both fruity and savory with scents of purple berry, earthy flora and iron. Discreetly concentrated in a middleweight style with flavors of black raspberry and blueberry-pomegranate framed by a moderately firm tannic backbone. There is a distinct savory, earthy tone. Beautifully crafted, with a bright mouthfeel and some finishing length. Even more enjoyable when tasted the following day from a previously opened bottle. Score: 93. 2014 Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard Santa Cru Mountains Chardonnay

13.6% alc., $50 (500 ml). 3.5 acres planted to Wente, Hyde and Mt. Eden clones. 1,450 to 1,500 feet elevation. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Enviable aromas of grilled lemon, honey, buttery brioche, nut oil and caramelized custard. Rich flavors of lemon, pear, golden baked apple, honey, caramelized nuts and buttered toast. A decadent and ripely fruited offering with a very lengthy finish replete with lemony goodness. A completely different wine than the 2015 version that is much less ripe and more acid driven. 2014 Rhys Vineyards Family Farm Vineyard San Mateo County Pinot Noir

13.5% alc., $59. 6.16 acres of Rhys selection, Swan, 115 and Pommard. Located at 400 feet elevation with a northeast facing exposure. 25% whole cluster, aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% new. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. The nose gains traction over time in the glass, offering hi-tone aromas of cherry, spice, floral notes and vanilla. The mid weight flavors of plum, boysenberry and ripe strawberry arrive on the attack with notice. Soft, even mellow in texture over time, with a pleasing grip of acidity on the bright finish. 13.2% alc., $79. 1.32 acres, mixed field blend clones. 450-500 feet elevation with a southwest facing exposure. 100% whole cluster, aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 25% new. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. The most open nose in the lineup, offering a seductive perfume of red berry, dark rose petal, spice and turned earth. Mid weight dark red fruits are featured, framed by raw, expressive tannins. Over time in the glass, well-spiced cherry fruit emerges lifted by juicy acidity. Oak plays a subtle dance in the background. 12.7% alc., $79. 10.85 acres planted to Rhys selection and two heritage clones at 1450-1610 feet elevation with an east, south and west facing exposure. 10% whole cluster, aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. This wine starts out quite savory with aromas of fertile earth, tobacco leaf and oak. The ebullient blackberry, pomegranate and black cherry fruits have a smoky, tobacco underpinning. The finish is remarkable for its succulence and longevity. Much more enjoyable when tasted six hours later from a previously opened bottle when the savory elements found more balance with the fruit tones. 2014 Rhys Vineyards Skyline Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

13.3% alc., $99. 2.12 acres planted to Rhys selection and Swan situated at 2280 to 2315 feet elevation with a southwest and southeast facing exposure. 100% whole cluster, aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 33% new. Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Many aromas show up over time on the nose including black cherry, exotic spice, burnt tobacco and rose petal. On the palate, the sappy purple fruits show uncommon concentration, but are in tune with the broad, energetic tannins and juicy acidity. The result is a beautifully balanced wine. Very exotic, with many varieties of spice showing up over time. There is textural interest from whole cluster inclusion as well. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Many aromas show up over time on the nose including black cherry, exotic spice, burnt tobacco and rose petal. 2014 Rhys Vineyards Alpine Vineyard Hillside Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

13.0% alc., $149. 2.25 acres, selection massale, 1600 feet elevation, 6” to 18” of topsoil over soft shale. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Initially, the aromas are brooding with only a hint of black cherry, burnt tobacco and oak. Substantial tannins underlie the prodigious core of sweet black cherry fruit that is augmented with notes of exotic spice, Charcuterie and black raspberry. There is enough lively acidity to invigorate the wine. When tasted the following day and three days later from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, this savory wine was more aromatic with some mellowing of tannin, but still not entirely friendly (although the fruit remained seductive as did the persistent finish). This wine will require considerable patience (? ten years) in the cellar for full enjoyment. 2013 Rhys Vineyards Alpine Vineyard Chardonnay

13.5% alc., $69. · Light golden yellow color in the glass. Gorgeous and intoxicating aromas of lemon, pineapple, yellow peach and crushed chalk. Equally sensational on the palate with a perfect marriage of luscious lemon cake, pineapple and pear flavors with uplifting acidity. A hint of complimentary nutty, vanillin oak adds to the appeal of this laser focused wine. The finish is incredibly long and refreshingly racy. I was so taken by this wine, that I stopped tasting other wines on this day and had a generous glass with lunch. A delicious, edgy wine without rival. 2013 Rhys Alpine Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

12.8% alc., $79. Rhys selection plus heritage clones from 11 acres located at an elevation of 1230 to 1400 feet. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Lovely aromas of dark red fruits, rose petal, and stem stream from the glass, becoming more expressive the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. The light to mid weight array of red and purple fruits accented with spice and herb notes is quite approachable. 2013 Rhys Home Vineyard San Mateo County Pinot Noir

13.0% alc., $79. A mixed field blend from 1.57 acres. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. The nose leads with aromas of red berries, rose petal and whole cluster spice. A daunting wine today, even when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, with muscular tannins that dominate the charming black cherry fruit. Whole cluster adds cinnamon and other baking spices along with stem notes. Softly textured, the wine’s tannins tend to ameliorate some over time in the glass allowing the cherry fruit to shine. 2012 Rhys Alpine Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

12.9% alc., magnum. · Dark garnet color in the glass. Intriguing aromas of black cherry, baking spices, tobacco, rose petal and Chanel #5. Over time, my enthusiasm for the nose reached a seductive stage and my notes say, “Great.!” Packed with chewy black fruits but very polished and silky in texture. Nothing out of place with complete integration of tannins. The generously- fruited finish easily last 30 seconds. This PrimaDonna is easily a 20-year wine. Score: 97. The nose is quite inviting, with aromas of black cherry, exotic spices, anise and sarsaparilla. Bright, juicy and very approachable, with flavors of cherry, raspberry, cola, and oakdriven toast and spice. Very elegant and charming, with mild tannins and a silky texture. Very complex nose with scents of alpine strawberry, raspberry, black cherry, conifer, sous-bois, spice and rose petal dancing in and out over time. Softly textured, harmonious and very approachable, with a tasty black cherry core framed by modest tannins and juicy acidity. Still showing a blanket of oak that will integrate over time. The nose is closed for business initially, opening more the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Darker cherry and raspberry flavors are featured. Very tasty, and soft and smooth in the mouth. Finishes with showy oak and slightly astringent tannins. Lacks some excitement now, and should be cellared for at least a year. Score: 89-90. 50 cases from 14,000 vines or 1 bottle per 25 vines! Usually 100% whole cluster, but cautious in this vintage and reduced to 67%. Price was raised in this vintage and some complained, but everyone asked for more. Harvey calls this a “superstar” vineyard. The Syrah from this vineyard is superb, but the Pinot Noir is so amazing that the Syrah is being grafted over to Pinot Noir. · This wine has it all: highly flavored dark berry and plum fruit, tons of spice, plenty of minerality, beautiful balance, supple tannins, and a focused finish. Lighter in weight with redder fruits than the 2009 vintage, but offering fresher and juicier strawberry and cherry flavors. 2010 Rhys Family Farm Vineyard San Mateo County Pinot Noir

12.7% alc., $59. From a 6.16-acre vineyard planted to Swan, 115, Pommard and Rhys selection in alluvial clay loam soil. · Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. Very complex nose offering an array of aromas including black plum, black currant, spice, boot leather and hay bale. Moderately rich black fruit flavors with an added hint of cola and tar. There is so much character in this wine that the drinker is quickly sent back to the glass for another sip, looking to discover the many nuances over time. The finish is extraordinarily generous and long, and the underlying cut of acidity really brings the wine to life. The balance predicates a long life for this wine. Score: 93. 2010 Rhys Alpine Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

13.2% alc., $69. From 1.73 acres planted to Hyde, Wente and Dijon clones at 1,230 to 1,400 feet elevation. 24” of top soil over soft shale. Grapes are slowly whole cluster pressed for 4 hours. The must is settled overnight and barrels filled in morning. 20-25% new French oak barrels are used. The wine is left undisturbed in cask without stirring to complete native yeast fermentation that sometimes can take an entire year. · Golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Appealing aromas of lemon peel, pineapple, slate and a hint of nutty, buttery oak. Delicious core of yellow apple and lemon flavors with a hint of butter brickle and oak. The fruit really pops in the mouth and hangs on for a very long and glorious finish. Juicy, crisp and thoroughly satisfying in every way. Yum. 2010 Rhys Alpine Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Chardonnay

13.4% alc., $69. From 3.51 acres of tightly spaced vines planted on low vigor rootstock onto which are grafted a field mixture of heritage selections of Chardonnay (Wente, Hyde, Mt. Eden). Soils are 18” - 24” rocky topsoil over Monterey Shale. Gently whole cluster pressed for 4 hours. The must is settled overnight and in the morning the barrels are filled by gravity. 20-25% new French oak barrels are used. The wine is left undisturbed in barrel without stirring, completing a native yeast fermentation that can sometimes take an entire year. · Golden yellow color and clear in the glass. This is a subtle wine that reveals many nuances over time if you are patient. There is a clear vein of “minerality” running through this wine evident in the sea brine aromas and the vibrant underlying acidity. The flavors of apple, white peach, crème brûlée, and a hint of butterscotch are inviting, and the silky texture of the wine is dreamy. There is some finishing length as well, uncommon in many Chardonnays from California. With the modest alcohol and bright acidity, this is an ideal food wine, but it is wonderful on its own. 13.7% alc., $69. The vineyard is 11 acres situated at 1230 to 1400 feet elevation with a 20% to 40% slope. Soils are 20” to 24” topsoil over soft shale. Clones are Rhys selection and five heritage clones planted with 6’ x 4’ spacing. · Oh My God! Orgasmic nose offering aromas of dark stone and berry fruits with a hint of whole cluster floral notes including violets. The aromas last and last in the glass. Flat-out delicious on the palate with layered flavors of dark plum and blackberry fruits with plenty of spice. Perfectly balanced with a silky smooth texture and a finish of uncommon length and intensity spiked with juicy mineral-driven acidity. Impressive grace and refinement and very approachable now, but will improve over the next several years. An outrageously good wine that I could drink all night long. Very shy aromas of red and black berries, smoky cave, and forest floor. Enticing flavors of spiced cherry, raspberry and baking spice with a touch of smoky oak in the background. 13.6% alc., $99. The SwanTerrace is 1.5 acres of the Alpine Vineyard planted to a Swan field selection with 6’ x 4’ spacing. This block is situated at 1210 to 1300 feet elevation with a 20% slope. Soils are 12” to 15” top soil over soft shale. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. More brooding that the Alpine Vineyard bottling, but opens slowly in the glass, revealing its charms slowly. Aromas of earth-kissed blackberry and exotic spices. Hits the palate with a creamy, delicious presence, offering an array of purple and black fruits, hints of cola, spice and oak, and quenching acidity on the dramatic finish. With air, the wine becomes silkier and livelier. A little darker fruited and moodier than the Alpine Vineyard wine as well as a touch more rustic and bold. Outgoing aromas of dark berries, spice, redwood and campfire. Satisfying fruity aromas including an array of dark berries and plum with a hint of vanilla. The core of dark berries and black plum flavors are saturating and bring the mid palate to attention. 2009 Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

13.3% alc., $69. Rhys selections and two heritage clones of Pinot Noir planted in 2004 on 10.85 acres. The defining feature of this vineyard is its intensely rocky soil composed of sedimentary Monterey shale. Elevation is 1,400 to 1,600 feet. All Pinot Noir at Rhys is fermented with native yeast, and aging is carried our in the finest French oak barrels that have been air dried for four full years in Burgundy. The consistency of the barrels implies that the wines are differentiated entirely by the vineyard and not by the barrel. The Pinot Noir wines are typically aged 18 months in barrel. The wines are never fined or filtered.

Note: Eleven years later, Horseshoe Vineyard is considered by the team at Rhys to be “one of the finest sites in California to grow Pinot Noir. The vineyard also produces Chardonnay that is “a stunning example of New World terroir….tremendously complex and invigorating wines. 13.3% alc., $59. · Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. The aromas are clean and airy, smelling of a vast meadow of damp earth and brush, but also endowed with scents of ripe dark cherries and black raspberry syrup. I find this nose enchanting. On the palate, the wine offers a dark red fruit festival with a hint of baking spices showing more body, more finish and better integrated tannins than the 2007 vintage version. With intense swirling, an appealing scent of mixed berry preserves, crushed black grapes, and a hint of floral perfume emerges. There is some earth and mineral infused quality to the fruit which is appealing and I sense that this wine will perform beautifully in another five years. This vineyard is located adjacent Benovia Winery planted in sandy Goldridge soils and impeccably farmed by owners Ron and Judy Lougheed. · Saddle up for this big boned wine. 13.9% alc., $49. Sourced from the steepest and lowest yielding section of Alpine Vineyard (see photo above). · Deeply colored. Muted aromas of dark fruits with a very appealing hint of exotic spices. Luscious broad-shouldered fruit core with impressive intensity, backed by firm tannins and offering an amazing persistence on the glorious finish. Similar in flavor to the regular Alpine Vineyard bottling but ramped up a notch. Drinking great two days later from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. 2006 Rhys Vineyards Alpine Road Vineyard Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

14.0% alc., $49. · Deep reddish-purple color and a deeply charmed wine. Taunting aroma of black raspberry jam. Delicious compote of brambly dark and blue berries that is mouth filling, yet majestically toned. There were other flavors that defied description. The tannins were mild, dry and fine-grained, there was notable absence of oak, and the wine had impeccable balance. Still drank beautifully the next day from an opened, re-corked bottle. 2006 Rhys Vineyards Home Vineyard San Mateo County Pinot Noir

13.3% alc., $59. · Marvelous Pinot scents of dark red cherries, roses and a touch of butterscotch. Highly unique flavors of exotically spiced dark red stone fruits and fraise de bois with a complimentary hint of oak. A wine of great finesse, very smooth in texture, with gossamer dry tannins and a lengthy, scented aftertaste. 2005 Alesia Chileno Valley Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

14.1% alc., $58. · Aromas of strawberry, juniper berry and sandalwood are appealing, but a woody and herbal greenness overwhelms the fruit. Like sucking on a wood branch. The green flavors could resolve to some degree with bottle age. Reviewed April 7, 2008 ARTICLE »

2005 Alesia Falstaff Road Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

14.7% alc., $62. Ron and Judy Loughred farm this vineyard on the extreme Sonoma Coast. This is the second label of Rhys vineyards and features several bottlings from purchased fruit. · Dark violet-red in color. Aromas start off with barnyard and diaper and evolve to cherry, root beer, hay and oak. Woody, earthy, and meaty at heart. With air, the flavors evolve with more black cherry charm. 2004 Alesia Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

14.1% alc., $39. Two bottles sampled - the two were completely different. · One bottle showed nice black raspberry, tobacco smoke and oak char scents with a healthy fruit core of blackberries, raspberries and a hint of herbs and wood. Silky in texture and clean on the finish. The second bottle showed a similar aromatic profile but oak char dominated the flavors and the finish was sour and unpleasant.
