Wine industry veteran David Vergari crafts Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon at Owl Ridge Wine Services in Sebastopol, CA, from purchased grapes in Sonoma and Marin counties. He brings years of winemaking experience in both Europe and Australia as well as California to his label which was started in 2003. His full story is told in the PinotFile Volume 6, Issue 7. He divides his time between the winery and vineyards in Northern California and his home life with Katie Orth in Sierra Madre in Southern California.
Vergari wines may be purchased on the website. Look for his wines in fine retail stores and restaurants.
In 2012, David took a job as winemaker for Thornton Winery in Temecula (Rhone varietals) and put his Vergari Pinot Noir label on hiatus. His last vintage was 2008.

This barrel sample is delicate with nicely spiced
red Pinot fruits. The texture is quite silky and the finish, although a touch hot, is clean
and satisfying.

2006 Vergari Marin County Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., pH 3.63, 145 cases, $36, released Fall 2008. Vineyard in
the Chileno Valley is farmed by noted viticulturist Mark Pasternak. Heritage and Dijon clones. Aged in 33%
new French oak for 11 months.

Shy but pleasing red fruit aromas touched by herbs. Cherry-driven on the
palate in an elegant style. Gossamer tannins and well-appointed acidity. Doesn’t excite, but decent.

2006 Vergari Sangiacomo Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.2% alc., pH 3.61, 178 cases, $42,
released Fall 2008. Sourced from the Roberts Road Vineyard located in the Petaluma Gap and farmed by the
Sangiacomo family who have been mainstays in Sonoma County for several generations. Pommard and Dijon
115 clones. Yields less than 1.5 tons per acre. Aged on fine lees in 20% new French oak for 10.5 months.
Released after 13+ months of bottle age.

Scents of blackberries and cranberries with subtle oak, exotic woods
and herbs. Medium-weighted red fruits with a slight olive oil and oak underpinning. Elegant with supple
tannins and bright acidity.

2006 Vergari Van der Kamp Vineyard Sonoma Mountain Pinot Noir

alc., 135 cases, $45. Heritage clones and Dijon 777. Low yields.

Dark reddishpurple
color. Beautiful aromatics that really draw you in. Deep, dark fruits
including black raspberries and mu shu plum sauce. Full-bodied and mouth
coating black fruits with an earthy underpinning. Velvety tannins frame the lush
fruit perfectly and the dry finish lingers memorably. The pedigree of this vineyard
shows through in this excellent wine.

2005 Vergari Sangiacomo Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
14.2% alc., 162 cases, $ not released.
This vineyard is located on the Santa Rosa Plain in Sonoma County in the cool Sonoma Coast appellation.
Clones are Pommard and Dijon 115, 777. The wine was decanted.

Bright, medium ruby robe. A
spicy nose to die for. A wine of great finesse that reveals itself slowly with many complex layers of Pinot
fruits, spice, herbs, and sassafras. The texture is all silk and caresses the palate like satin. I feel a glow
just thinking about this wine. Great!

2004 Vergari Dunah Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
13.7% alc., 206
cases, $39. The DuNah Vineyard is located southwest of Sebastopol in the Russian River Valley appellation.
The location is very cool, with sugars not exceeding 24 degree Brix. The clones are Pommard,
and Dijon 115, 777. Rick and Diane DuNah meticulously farm this vineyard. Besides their own label, have supplied grapes to Flowers and Williams Selyem.

This is a darker and richer Pinot Noir than the
other two in the lineup. The scents of black cherries, toast, licorice and roasted nuts are alluring. Dark
fruits and forest floor flavors coat the palate. The lengthy finish has herbal and oak notes and a slight bitterness.
This wine really sings with food which smoothes out and highlights the fruit on the backend.

2004 Vergari Van der Kamp Vineyard Sonoma Mountain Pinot Noir

alc., 104 cases, $39. The Van der Kamp Vineyard is located at an elevation of
2100 and is composed of heritage clones and Dijon 777. This Pinot has been slow
to come around and wasn’t released until 1 year after bottling.

The wine is
burgundy in color and mildly cloudy (David chose not to filter, preferring to preserve
the delicate flavors). There is an attractive perfume of spiced cherry-rhubarb
pie. The wine is sleek and refined on the palate with elegant fruit flavors underpinned
with wet leaf and mushroom notes. The tannins are supple and the finish is
clean and lively.
