Pinot Noir grapes for Gryphon come from the estate Larklinn Ranch; 120 acres nestled in the ‘deep end’ of Anderson Valley, California. The rolling hills on which the vineyard is planted are graced with abundant sunlight and cool afternoon breezes blowing in from the Mendocino coast. Our land is bordered by tall redwoods and traversed by a year round creek. The lowlands support a pond, a century old fruit orchard and some beautiful old barns built by John Guntley in about 1912 when the property was known as “Horse Haven”.
Jonathan O'Bergin purchased the property in January 2000 and immediately set about to plant 7 acres of Pinot Noir grapes. The first significant harvest (4 tons) was in 2003 from which Jonathan made his Gryphon Reserve that year. Gryphon wines are made only from estate grapes, which are sustainably grown, without chemical In 2004 only, some Santa Lucia Highland fruit was added in) O'Bergin is in the process of getting Larklinn organically certified. The nose is stunning with a
bright berry onslaught. The wine is fruit-driven with dense and chewy stone fruits, but could use more
acid. The finish is marked by massive tannins.

2004 Gryphon Larklinn Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
14.7% alc. $45.

The
heat in the tent seemed to exaggerate the alcohol in this wine. The nose featured
attractive berry jam aromas. Plenty of stuffing on the palate with moderate tannins
that still need to be shed. Showed better when tasted last year.
