Joseph, now assisted by his son, Philippe, owns 12 hectares in the villages of Gevrey-Chambertin and Marsannay. The family has been farming grapes on the same land for 300 years. The domaine produces virtually near perfect Mazis-Chambertin and Charmes-Chambertin in the top vintages. Joseph is undoubtedly one of Burgundy's finest winemakers and his style is rich, powerful and sensual. Yields are low, some stems are used, and the wines are raised in plenty of charred new oak. Joseph has been called many names including eccentric and "enfant terrible," and as a result he shuns the limelight, avoids visitors and recognition. Some of his old vines are over 100 years old. Production numbers are vague.

Light in color and body, this elegant wine smells of fresh sawed wood and mushrooms
and tastes of rhubarb and red currents. Muscular tannins still persist on the finish.
