This is a new producer with the 2007 vintage of Anderson Valley Pinot Noir. The founder and winemaker is Jon Grant, who learned his trade at several notable Napa Valley wineries including PlumpJack Winery, Corison Winery, Robert Mondavi Winery and Turley Wine Cellars. While a tour guide at Robert Mondavi Winery, he first visited the Anderson Valley in 1997. Grant loved the valley and the wines and vowed to make single-vineyard Pinot Noirs from the Anderson Valley.
Couloir refers to a steep mountainside gorge and reflects Grant's love for ski mountaineering. It was while managing a wine store at Snowbird Ski Resort in Utah and overseeing the resort's dining room wine programs that he became enthralled with wine.
Grant works with grapes sourced from both Anderson Valley and other California appellations. Production is tiny and the wines are sold through a mailing list and offered for sale at the winery's tasting room in Tiburon, California.
