Bink Wines

Bink Wines is a partnership between owners and winemakers Deborah Schatzlein and Cindy Paulson. All of the wines come from the Yorkville Highlands appellation, which is located just south and inland of the Anderson Valley in Mendocino County.
Deborah has degrees in chemistry and biology, has taken many courses in viticulture and enology, and received winemaking experience in the Napa Valley and Russian River Valley. After a career as a chemical process engineer and environmental consultant, she ditched her day job to follow her passion for winemaking.
The name, Bink, comes from the Manx cat with a black coat and beguiling eyes. The lineup includes a Syrah and Merlot as well.
All of the wines are crafted at Bin to Bottle in Napa. The wines are sold on the website. 707-246-4468.

2014 Bink Wines Filligreen Farm Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

Moderately light
cherry red color in the glass. Satisfying aromas of cherry, rose petal, baking spice, sandalwood and chalk lead
to a mid weight styled wine strutting flavors of blueberry, black cherry, spice and subtle oak in an elegant style.
Flavors veer to the riper said, but never find over ripeness.
Score: 90.

2012 Bink Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
14.5% alc., 190 cases, $40. 100% de-stemmed whole berry native
fermentation, aged 16 months in 20% new French oak.

Moderately light reddish purple hue in the glass. An
easy drinking, elegant wine featuring cherries, cranberries, vanilla and cinnamon spice. The wine is very
forward, with nicely managed tannins, and a pleasingly smooth finish of some length.
Score: 90.

2012 Bink Thomas T. Thomas Vineyard Anderson Valley Pinot Noir
14.4% alc., 92 cases, $54. Sourced
from a 3-acre vineyard planted in 2008 adjacent Toulouse Vineyard. This is a monopole in that Bink takes all
the fruit from this vineyard owned by a former Treasurer of Genentech. 4 clones: 777, 115, Calera and Pommard. This
wine is 75% Pommard. Aged 16 months in 50% new French oak. A barrel selection.

Moderate reddish purple
color in the glass. Plenty to like in this wine with soaring aromas of black cherry and spice echoed on the mid
weight palate that offers additional notes of sassafras and cola. Very fresh tasting and impeccably crafted with
striking polish and harmony.

2009 Bink Weir Vineyard Yorkville Highlands Pinot Noir
14.2% alc., $38.

Moderately light ruby red color in
the glass. Demure aromas of cherries, spice, briar and marzipan. Lighter style, featuring flavors of dark
strawberry and cherry with an earthy, cola-driven underpinning. The tannins are fine grain and modest, the
acidity is bright and the wine is quite enjoyable although it does not offer the mid palate impact and finish of
some other Weir Vineyard wines tasted. Drink or hold.

2006 Bink Hawks Butte Vineyard Yorkville Highlands Syrah
14.9% alc., $25. This vineyard is farmed by
Cindy Paulson. It is located at 1,800 feet on a steep hillside. Most of the fruit is sold to Wells Guthrie of
Copain. 25%-30% whole cluster.

Very dark reddish purple color in the glass. Aromas and flavors of blackberry,
cassis, pepper and tobacco. Broad shouldered but refined with an intense, long, fruit-driven finish that leaves a
hint of alcohol in its wake. An enjoyable, fully mature wine.

2005 Bink Wines Weir Vineyard Yorkville Highlands Pinot Noir
$40. The
7-acre Weir Vineyard is farmed meticulously by Bill and Susan Weir. Planted
about 15 years ago at 850-1000 feet in a unique cool microclimate, the vineyard
is divided into older plantings (DRC suitcase clone and Wadenswil 2A)
and newer plantings (Pommard Rochioli Riverblock). Williams Selyem has
bottled a superb vineyard designate Pinot Noir from this vineyard for several
years and Drew Wines bottles a terrific example.

A Pinot Noir with a Burgundian
soul with plenty of earthy and mineral underpinning. The dark red fruits
are juicy and pure and the wine is beautifully balanced and composed.
