Proprietor and winemaker Jamie Whetstone learned the business at Turley Wine Cellars beginning in 1998. Prior to that he found his calling while working as a manager at Mustards Grill in Yountville. He started his own brand, Whetstone Wine Cellars, in 2002, is a partner in Manifesto! Wines, and hires out as a winemaking consultant.
He spent a summer in 2001 working at Domaine Dujac in Burgundy (he is fluent in Spanish but this was of no help here!) before founding Whetstone Wine Cellars. Life is not all work and he is also an avid surfer.
His winemaking approach is minimalistic, using native yeasts, and bottling without filtering. His lineup includes Pinot Noirs from Belle Vigne Vineyard (Swan, 777) Sonoma Coast, Hirsch Vineyard (Mt Eden, Pommard) Sonoma Coast, Pleasant Hill (115,667,777) Russian River Valley and a proprietary Sonoma Coast blend called Jon Boat. Annual production is about 4,000 cases of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Viognier and Syrah from sites in Sonoma and Napa.
He 2014, he sold a percentage of his two labels to Charles Banks of Terroir Selections and became the winemaker for Evening Lands Vineyards' Sonoma operations.
The wines are sold on the website.
2006 Whetstone Pleasant Hill Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir
14.3% alc., $50. · A nose of some interest featuring red Pinot fruits, toast, farmyard, pickle, and floral scents. Cherry-driven with a bit of cherry candy, spice, vanilla, and char. Soft with slippery tannins. Perfectly decent. Reviewed August 4, 2008 ARTICLE »
