Owner and winemaker Ryan Beauregard is a fourth-generation winegrower in the Santa Cruz Mountains. He founded his winery in 2000 at the tender age of 25. Today the winery farms 105 acres, the largest holding in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Production is 5,000 cases, all of which is estate grown.
The history of the winery goes back to 1945 when Amos Beauregard bought 13 acres of vines from the Questof family who originally planted the vineyard in 1880, and farmed the vineyard for many years. It is now planted with Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel and Chardonnay vines and newly named Beauregard Ranch. Amos' son, Emmit (Bud) Beauregard, founder of Shopper's Corner Grocery Story in Santa Cruz, farmed the family land for a lifetime while running the family store. Bud's son, Jim Beauregard, planted hundreds of acres throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains and from 1976 to 1984 was a partner in the famed Felton Empire Winery. Today, he maintains all 105 vineyard acres (Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon) with son Ryan.
Ryan Beauregard created his first wines for Beauregard Vineyards from the 2000 vintage. He developed a love for winegrowing at a young age. Growing up on the Beauregard Ranch, he played among the vines as a child. Ryan avoids chemical manipulation of his wines, using native yeasts, aging his wines on their lees, and using a minimal percentage of new oak barrels.
A tasting room is located in an historic building at 10 Pine Flat Road in the Ben Lomond Mountain region of the Santa Cruz Mountains that was the previous home of Bonny Doon Vineyard for 25 years. Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Aromas of black cherry, black
raspberry, sandalwood and sweet pipe smoke are slow to develop and
are considerably more effusive when the wine was sampled a day after
opening. Lavish black cherry, black raspberry and spice flavors greet
the palate with expansive power and richness. A dancing Pinot Noir
with the perfect balance of ripe fruit, vital acidity and refined tannin. The
finish seems endless.

Moderate garnet color
in the glass. The aromas of muddled dark fruits are slow to arrive and noticeably better when the wine was
sampled the day after opening. A tad lighter in weight compared to the 2017 vintage, but the dark cherry and
black raspberry fruit is more flavorful and charming. Elegant, with faint tannins, some finishing persistence and
absent of any oak attribute.

color in the glass. Effusive aromas of red currant and cherry with a compliment of toasty oak. Brimming with
succulent dark red fruits that fan out with impressive length on the finish. Freshness is driven by a lively acid
spine and there is overall satisfying harmony. The oak is well-integrated and the finish goes on and on.

and oak. Somewhat hardy in a mid-weight plus style, with flavors of black cherry and blackberry fruit, spice and
seasoned oak. Soothing in texture, with integrated tannins and some, but not extraordinary length on the finish.

2012 Beauregard Coast Grade Vineyard ‘828’ Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir
120 cases, $60. Vineyard is located in
Bonny Doon (Ben Lomond subregion) and is owned and farmed by Jim Beauregard. This 17-acre vineyard
was planted in 2008 at 1,238’ to 1,350’ elevation and is heavily influenced by nearby Monterey Bay. 50%
whole cluster. Aged in 50% new American oak. It’s rare if ever you meet a Pinot Noir aged in a significant
amount of American Oak, much less one made with a single ‘828’ clone.

Moderately dark reddish purple color
in the glass. A pleasant surprise with aromas and flavors of fresh blackberry, cassis and pomegranate.
Discreetly concentrated with a likable touch of whole cluster spice complimenting the fruit. A saline-driven
minerality plays in the background.

Very shy, perfumed nose featuring dark
fruits, forest floor, spice and cut flowers. Discreetly composed core of black
cherry and berry fruit flavors with impeccable integration of oak. Well muscled
and structured with fine grain tannins and a welcoming grip of acidity. Still a
young and unevolved wine that has great potential. Very good.

dark reddish-purple color in the glass. Aromas of black cherries, raspberries,
cassis, spice, and barbecue. Tasty juice with moderately intense flavors of dark
cherries, berries and pomegranates with a hint of earthiness. Soft in the mouth
with enough tannin and acidity to balance the alcohol. A husky wine that shows
some charm. Good.

and American oak barrels.

Moderately deep reddish-purple color in the glass.
Darkly fruited on the nose and palate with some toasty oak in the background.
Added notes of dark rose petals on the nose add interest. Restrained tannins
and a pleasing core of fruit that has some persistence on the finish. An herbal
oak flavor detracts. Good.
