The Bergström family are of Swedish heritage and lived in Portland from the 1970s-1990s. In 1999, Josh Bergström returned to Oregon after a postgraduate program in viticulture and enology in Burgundy and founded the Bergström label with his father, John Bergström, a Portland-based physician. In 2001, Kendall Bergström and her husband Paul de Lancellotti joined the business, a new winery was constructed at the top of Calkins Lane in the Chehalem Mountains , and the de Lancellotti Estate Vineyard was planted.
Josh's experience in burgundy led him to harvest early, after weaning himself from the practice of tasting for ripeness. The Burgundians also inspired him to commit to biodynamics, which he practices in all of his vineyards. The Bergström winery now farms five estate vineyards (Bergström, de Lancellotti, Gregory Ranch, Winery Block and Pre du Col), totaling 85 acres. Biodynamic farming dates to 2000. Pinot Noir is also sourced from Shea Vineyard and Temperance Hill Vineyard. 80% of production is estate grown.
Production is 12,000 cases annually of Pinot Noir (nine different bottlings in 2006), and Chardonnay (two bottlings), 85% of which is estate grown. The Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays are generous wines rich in oak, flavor and concentration, yet bright.
The tasting room at 18215 NE Calkins Lane in Newberg is open daily from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Tours and wine and food pairing is offered by appointment (503-554-0468). The Bergström wines are available on the website and through retail channels.

2018 Bergström Temperance Hill Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir

Moderately dark
garnet color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with aromas of dark cherry, winter Wassail spices, dark red rose
petal and a touch of oak. A middleweight style with welcome swagger, offering bold flavors of well-spiced
boysenberry and blueberry-pomegranate. Very sleek and polished, with excellent weight and presence. The
modest tannins are tucked in, a shadow of oak is supportive, and the finish is quite long.

2012 Bergström Gregory Ranch Yamhill-Carlton District Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
14.1% alc.,$47.50. From an estate-farmed vineyard
owned by Wine Club members Dr. Kenton and Cindy Gregory. The
vineyard was planted in 2007 to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. 21 acres
with 15 different clonal blocks on a steep hillside. Soils are sandstonebased
marine.

Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass.
Highly aromatic and alluring with bright aromas of black cherries, black
raspberries, plum reduction sauce and spice. Exuberant and luscious on the
palate with waves of black cherry, boysenberry and black raspberry fruits
accented with spice. Velvety in texture with suave tannins and beautifully
integrated oak. Highly pleasurable, this wine shows up the ripe, forward fruit of Oregon’s 2012 vintage. When
tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine was even more aromatic and
flavorful. Wow!

2012 Bergström Le Pré do Col Vineyard Ribbon Ridge Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
14.1% alc., $52.
Vineyard is one mile west of the winery, a 16-acre estate-farmed site owned by the Hill family. Planted in 2006
to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in marine sedimentary soils in a relatively warm microclimate.

Moderate reddish
purple color in the glass. Shy fruit on the nose with plenty of spicy and tobacco-laced oak. Well-structured but
not muscular, with a very tasty core of darker fruits including black cherry, plum and blackberry. The finish is
most notable because of its boldness and length. The wine still displays a significant oak overlay that should
integrate over time. Tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the oak was less
evident.

2012 Bergström Silice Chehalem Mountains Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
14.1% alc., $56. Sourced from a 21-acre estate-farmed vineyard contiguous to
the winery owned by Joan Camp. Sedimentary hillside site that is rich in silica,
situated at 400 feet elevation.

Moderate reddish purple hue in the glass. I found
the nose very appealing with a complex array of scents including cherry,
raspberry, cola, bark and cola. On entry, there is an explosion of dark red cherry
and raspberry fruit that expands in the mouth and holds on tenaciously on the
finish. Very polished with supportive oak treatment, a velvety mouth feel and
admirable harmony.

blend. Primarily sourced from de Lancellotti, Shea and Bergström vineyards.

color in the glass. Aromas of black cherries, spiced dark berry jam, and mocha java. Fresh and juicy, modest
in weight, featuring a core of dark red and black cherries and berries with a noticeable topcoat of oak. About
the same the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Decent.

2010 Bergström Shea Vineyard Yamhill-Carlton District Willamette Valley Pinot Noir

Moderately light reddish-purple hue in the glass. The nose has a noticeable oak imprint. Light in weight, even
a bit shallow, featuring delicate flavors of dark red fruits buried in coffee-scented oak. An elegant style that
needs time to fully integrate the oak, but currently does not have enough Pinot singing. Decent.

less than 0.9 tons per acre in this vintage. This 13-acre site was planted in 1999 and is certified Biodynamic®.

Medium reddish-purple color in the glass. Very shy fruit on the nose with primarily oak-driven aromas. Bright
cherry core wrapped in supple tannins finishing with flourish of oak. Juicy and vivid with a good cut of citrus
peel acidity in the background. The charming fruit is somewhat buried in oak at present. About the same the
following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Good.

2009 Bergström Shea Vineyard Yamhill-Carlton District Oregon Pinot Noir
14.1% alc., $46.

Moderately intense reddish-purple color in
the glass. Complex perfume exhibiting scents of purple fruits, spice,
cigar box and toast. A medium weighted, tasty wine that offers layers of
flavors including fresh plums, blackberries and Hoison sauce. The wine
flows smoothly over the palate and lingers on the finish for what seems
like 60 seconds. Hearty tannins are now evident, but they are well balanced by
the fruit and acidity. Shea Vineyard performed beautifully in this vintage and
Bergström has spotlighted this iconic fruit source beautifully. This wine will have
many fans.

Moderate reddishpurple
hue in the glass. Very shy fruit on the nose with hints of brioche and cut
flowers. Hi-tone red and black fruits with undertones of pomegranate, edible
flowers and oak. Great purity of fruit, silky textured, with admirable elegance
and harmony. Needs cellaring. Very good.

2006 Lost Highway Project Willamette Valley Pinot Noir
14.5% alc, 150
cases, $55. A special release from Bergström Wines sourced from three
vineyards: Nysa 1/3, Bergström 1/3, and de Lancellotti 1/3. Produced in conjunction
with Vine Street Imports (VSI), an importer of fine wine that collaborates with
winemakers to create original and exclusive bottlings with labels designed by
internationally acclaimed artists. Beginning in 2002, a unique wine has been
released each year by VSI.

Very dark reddish-purple color. Inviting dark themed
nose of blackberry jam, chocolate and mocha. Plush, rich, and darkly
fruited with subtle oak and forest floor accents. A powerful wine that needs
time to assimilate the substantial tannins, but it will always be a glamazon.

760 cases, $65. A barrel selection from the East Hill portion of Shea Vineyard. Clones 115, 777, 828 and
Wädenswil.

Leads off with dark fruits, a hint of spice, sandalwood and alcohol. A big and weighty muscular
style with thick earth, wood, tar, char, mushroom and black stone fruit flavors. Smooth in texture with wellcorralled
tannins and a mildly dry finish. This wine makes a statement but I am not totally receptive to this big
style. Hearty food would tame the wine now, but cellaring the wine a few years would be preferable.
