Sapphire Hill is located on the original homestead of Lucy and Levi Grove who acquired 120 acres in 1869 from Captain John Cooper who was granted the El Molino Ranchero by General Vallejo. The only remaining original structure is the homestead chimney made from rocks taken from the Russian River.
In 1989, winery partners Tim Meinken (winemaker), Anne Giere, John Hall and Denice Engstrom, planted 32 hillside acres to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir and later Syrah. In the early years, the grapes were sold to Rodney Strong, Sonoma-Cutrer, La Crema, and Murphy Good Estate Winery. The partners launched their own label in 1997 from estate-grown grapes. In 2002, Sapphire Hill Winery established their own winery in Healdsburg at 51 Front Street.
In 2011, the winery was sold to new owners, Lis Mulcahy and Chris Mulcahy. The winemaker, Tami Collins, is dedicated to producing small hand-crafted lots of wine from the Russian River, Dry Creek and Alexander valleys. The winery specializes in Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.
A Russian River Valley appellation Pinot Noir and a Ketcham Vineyard Reserve Russian River Valley Pinot Noir were produced in the 2009 vintage. The wines are sold through the winery's online store.
A tasting room is shared with several boutique wineries at Front Street 5 (51 Front Street, Healdsburg). Open Thurs-Mon 11:00-4:30.

14.4% alc., $32. Gold Medal winner 2008 Sonoma County harvest Fair. Unfined and unfiltered. · Complex nose of black cherries, cinnamon and cardamon spices, grilled fruit, herbs and a hint of pepper. Fresh and bright dark cherry core highlighted by oak which is prominent on the lively finish. Soft, smooth and tasty in the mouth.
