This estate's 144 acres is situated in the Petaluma Gap of Sonoma County in the town of Cotati. Michael Karah started the winery in 1995 with the goal of specializing in Pinot Noir. The property is rich in history and folkore, built upon land used by the famous environmental artists Christo and Jeane-Claude to create their Running Fence in 1976.
There are a total of 39 acres of Pinot Noir planted to various clones and 7 acres of Chardonnay. An additional label, Karah Estate Vineyard, is to be added, and a new website under the Karah Estate Vineyard name is to be functioning sometime in 2011.
Winemaker Warner Henderson hooked up with Karah in 2002, directed the refurbishment of the estate vineyards, and directed the conversion of an old hay barn into the estate winery. He left in 2010.
Visitors are welcome Saturdays and Sundays 12:00-5:00. Stunning views from the tasting room. The 2001, 2002 and 2003 Pinot Noirs from Northface Vineyard on the estate are for sale on the website.
2003 Windy Hill Estate Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir
12.5% alc., $25. An estate bottled wine from Windy Hill Estate in Cotati (Petaluma Gap region of Sonoma Coast). · A complex aromatic profile consisting of black cherry, rhubarb, herbs and a touch of oak, gaining power with time in the glass. Oak dominates the grillmarked fruit on the palate especially on the finish. Silky in texture with supple tannins and a dry finish. Decent at best. Reviewed November 17, 2008 ARTICLE »
