Hollywood director Roger Donaldson owns a 20-acre vineyard in Gibbston, Central Otago next door to friend and actor Sam Neill, and makes wines under the Sleeping Dogs label. The name, Sleeping Dogs, refers to Donaldson's first film success. The vineyard is one of the oldest in the Gibbston Valley and is managed by viticulturist Richard Williams.
Winemaker Dean Shaw crafts the wines. The United States importer is Station Imports in Colorado Springs, CO. Check the importer's website for availability.

Very showy and persistent aromas of dark berries and black
cherries with a hint of Moroccan spice. Terrific nose. Drinks like a
berry smoothie with some herbs added in for health. Gossamer
tannins, pillowy texture and racy acidity. A delightful drink with plenty of zip and
zing.

2004 Sleeping Dogs Central Otago New Zealand Pinot Noir
13.5% alc., $25, screw cap. The owner, Roger Donaldson, is a movie producer and friend of Sam Neil. The name, "Sleeping Dogs," comes from Sam Neil's first movie of the same name. Grapes were sourced from Bannockburn, Lowburn and a family vineyard on Old Gibbston Road.

Fragrant with fresh strawberries, cut flowers and herbs with dried fruit undertones. The tasty fruit flavors are very light and a good kick of acidity provides a refreshing bent to the tannic finish.
