Farmed by Brian Zalaznick, this vineyard is located on the western side of Philo on a slope above the Navarro River. 11.5 acres of Dijon and heritage clones planted in gravelly soil. This wine is composed of Pommard, “828,” and 667 clones. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The perfume of blackberry jam, black tea, roseate scent, and herb seasoning is quite satisfying. Mid weight flavors of blackberry, baking spices and coffee are nicely balanced with the t n’ a. Satiny in the mouth, with an array of dark fruits fanning out on the finish. Score: 90. 2014 Donum Estate Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 14.3% alc., pH 3.88, TA 0.55, 459 cases, $72. Pommard, Swan, Martini, David Bruce, 2A, and Dijon 115, 667, 777 and “828.” Aged in French oak barrels, 59% new. Sourced from Angel Camp Vineyard in the “deep-end” of the Anderson Valley north of Philo. A barrel selection from several blocks. Winemaker Dan Fishman. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. Shy, but pleasant aromas of black cherry, blackberry, blueberry, spice and bittersweet chocolate. Full-bodied, with a charge of blackberry and prune flavors underlain with healthy oak-driven notes of coffee and dark chocolate. 2013 Stemmler Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., pH 3.69, TA 0.58, 264 cases, $44. Bottled August 2014. Fruit was sourced from 9 different blocks of the Angel Camp Vineyard. 37% David Bruce, Swan, Wädenswil and Pommard clones, and 63% Dijon 115, 667, 777 and “828.” 100% de-stemmed, 4 to 7-day cold soak, aged on fine lees for 9 months in 100% French oak barrels, 30% new. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is noticeably floral, with added scents of black raspberry, blueberry and forest floor. Concentrated and sappy, with flavors of blueberry, pomegranate, black raspberry and strawberry. 2013 Stemmler Anderson Valley Whole Cluster Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., pH 3.91, TA 0.52, 48 cases, $44. One ton of Martini clone from Angel Camp Vineyard went straight to tank. Once fermentation started after about 7 to 10 days, the grapes were gently pressed to open the berries, and fermentation was allowed to continue at a slow pace. Aged on the lees for 9 months in 100% once-used French oak barrels. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Enticing aromas of black cherry, underbrush and potpourri lead to a mid weight core of black cherry and black raspberry fruit accented with exotic spices. The slightest green thread in the background hints at whole cluster but is complimentary rather than detractive. This wine has more firm tannin than the regular Anderson Valley bottling, but is more nuanced and intellectual to drink with the whole cluster contributing complexity and interest. Score: 91. 2013 Dutton Goldfield Angel Camp Vineyard Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., pH 3.63, TA 0.58, 459 cases, $58. Sourced from a 11.5-acre vineyard west of Philo. Clones are Pommard, “828,” and 667. 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, co-fermentation of clones, aged 11 months in French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose and palate are dark fruited with complimentary notes of oak-driven spice and sandalwood. More Pinot perfume needed. The tannins are well-matched, there is a good acid backbone, and the wine picks up some interest over time in the glass. Still it remains a very good but not special wine. Score: 89. 2013 Donum Single Vineyard Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., pH 3.65, TA 0.58, 423 cases, $72. Sourced from the Angel Camp Vineyard located in the deep end of the Anderson Valley north of Philo. Seven clones of Pinot Noir in volcanic, sandy soil at 500 feet elevation. A barrel-selected blend from all the vineyard blocks. 6-day cold soak, extended maceration of 20 to 26 days. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. A forward drinking wine, offering aromas and flavors of black cherry, blackberry jam, vanilla and toast. 2013 Donum Single Vineyard Angel Camp Vineyard Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 14.2% alc., pH 3.69, TA 0.57, 135 cases, $90. Sourced from an 11-acre property planted to Wädenswil, David Bruce, Martini and Swan selections as well as Dijon clones 115, 667, and “828.” The largest component was the co-fermentation of Dijon 115 and 777. Aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 87% new. A favorite six barrel blend. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Brooding aromas of ultra ripe black fruits lead to a full-bodied and intensely sappy wine featuring black cherry and black currant flavors framed by matching tannins. The fruit load has embraced the high percentage of new oak which is well integrated. Unusually dense for a Pinot Noir and the boldest wine in the 2013 Donum lineup. Score: 90. 2012 Stemmler Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., pH 3.90, TA 0.57, 117 cases, $44. Released May 2014. Inaugural release from the Angel Camp Vineyard in the “deep end” of the Anderson Valley. Dijon clones “828,” 115, 667 and 777 plus Pommard and Wädenswil clones, and David Bruce, Swan, and Martini selections. Indigenous yeast fermentations. Aged 15 months in 20% new Remond French oak barrels. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. The richly fruited nose explodes with aromas of dark berries and cherries and the wondrous smell of wine cave. Very suave and seductive on the palate, with waves of dark berry and plum fruit balanced with refined tannins. Packs plenty of pleasure, although not as appealing the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle indicating it is a wine for current drinking. Score: 90. 2012 Chanamé Angel Camp & Charles Vineyards Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 14.2% alc., pH 3.21, TA 0.57, 49 cases, $45. Harvest Brix 23.5º. 100% de-stemmed, Aged 14 months in Sonoma Mountain caves in 50% new French oak. Unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Shy, but appealing aromas of cherry pie glaze and red raspberry preserves. Vivid flavors of cherry, cranberry and raspberry with a hint of spice and sandalwood. Very juicy, with bright acidity and immersed tannins, building in the mouth to a climatic finish. An impressive wine that has an uplifting freshness and impeccable balance. 2012 Angel Camp Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 13.8% alc., 353 cases, $55. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Appealing aromas of black cherries, plum and dried herbs. Soft and smooth on the palate with a plethora of dark stone fruits and berries with an earthy undertone. The tannins are integrated and the finish is generous and pleasing. Score: 92. 2012 Balo Avenging Angel Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 13.9% alc., pH 3.41, TA 0.62, 152 cases, $55. 50% Balo Vineyard and 50% Angel Camp Vineyard fruit (1 ton of each) produced to remember lost family members and friends. Christian H. Maltby (deceased 9/11/01) and Edward P. Zalanick (deceased 1/3/04) are the inspiration. Clones are Pommard 5, 777, 667, Swan and Wädenswil. Harvest Brix 23.8º. 50% whole cluster. Aged in 15% new French oak. Alex Crangle is the winemaker. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Shy aromas of red fruits, spice and sweet oak. A red cherry bombast that is bracing and very satisfying with a good cut of acidity, a subtle compliment of oak, and a fine-grain, velvety mouthfeel. 2012 Dutton-Goldfield Angel Camp Vineyard Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., pH 3.66, TA 0.59, 306 cases, $58. This vineyard is owned by Dan Goldfield’s good friend Brian Zalaznick, who planted this 11.5-acre vineyard in memory of his brother and family. It is located west of Philo on a knoll above the Navarro River, overlooking the valley. 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, co-fermentation of clones (Pommard, “828,” and 667), 50% of press wine added back to enhance aromatics, aged 11 months in 50% new French oak barrels. · Moderately dark reddish purple robe in the glass. This is one of those wines that you know is special from the get-go. Enormous aromas of black raspberry, black cherry, spice and sweet oak. Medium to full bodied and lush, it is crammed with zesty black cherry and black raspberry fruit with an undertone of cola, Asian 5-spice and dark chocolate. The tannins are modest and fine-grained, the lip-smacking acidity adds juiciness, and the supple finish is remarkably long and focused. The wine holds up beautifully after an hour in the glass. 2012 Donum Single Vineyard Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., pH 3.79, TA 0.60, 348 cases, $72. Dijon 115, 777 and 667, Martini, David Bruce and Swan. Heirloom selections and Dijon clones were fermented separately with different regimens. Aged in 100% French oak barrels, 53% new from several coopers. The final blend was about 30% heirloom and 70% Dijon. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Inviting complexity in this wine that offers scents of blackberry, pomegranate, spice, mocha and espresso. Mid weight plus attack of sappy purple and black berry fruits with contributions from pomegranate, spice and oak. 2012 Donum Single Vineyard Angel Camp Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., pH 3.75, TA 0.61, 126 cases, $90. Swan, David Bruce, Pommard and Dijon “828.” Heirloom selections and Dijon clones vinified separately with different regimens. The wine is meant to be the best blend that can be made from this vineyard each year. In 2012, the blend contained only heirloom selections. · Dark reddish purple color in the glass. Pleasant aromas of black cherry, sous-bois and herbs. Plenty of ripe blackberry, cassis and beefy flavors backed by substantial tannic sinew. Soft and velvety on the palate with some finishing drive. 2011 Angel Camp Anderson Valley Pinot Noir 13.4% alc., 250 cases, $52. Released June 1, 2013. Angel Camp is a 12-acre vineyard located in the Deep End of the Anderson Valley nestled between the Navarro River and Highway 128. Planted in 2006 to 9 different clones. 5 clones in this wine: 777, David Bruce, Martini, Pommard and Swan. Winemaker Jon Keyes. 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, native yeast fermentation, natural malolactic fermentation, aged in 40% new French oak barrels. Unfined and unfiltered. · Moderate light reddish-purple color and slight haze (unfiltered) in the glass. Aromas of oak, sandalwood and baking spices. Vivid cherry and red plum flavors with a heavy tug of oak, and a refreshing finish with a good cut of acidity. A little flat and should benefit from another 6-12 months in bottle. Good.
