Cross-flow filtered. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Aromas of earth-dusted Bing cherry, sandalwood and spice with a hint of volatile acidity upon opening. The luscious black cherry core makes an impression as does the persistent finish. The texture is silken smooth by virtue of compatible tannins. 2015 Brooks Rastaban Brooks Estate Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., pH 3.60, TA 0.54, 500 cases, $60. Vines planted from 1973 to 2001 in volcanic Nekia soil. Pommard, 115 and 777 clones. Average harvest Brix 24.2º. Native yeast fermentation, aged 18 months in French oak barrels. Cross-flow filtered. · Moderately light ruby red color in the glass. This wine is slow to give up its charms and was much better when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Really nice aromas of cherry, strawberry and spice lead to a delicate and lacy wine that is quite juicy and seductive. Mid weight flavors of black cherry, pomegranate and hazelnut are framed by gentle but supportive tannins. Forward drinking, with a lush texture, and impeccable balance. Score: 93. 2014 Brooks Janus Willamette Valley Oregon Pinot Noir 13.8% alc., pH 3.64, TA 0.54, 1,500 cases, $38. 58% Brooks Estate Vineyard with contributions from several other vineyards in the Willamette Valley, primarily Eola-Amity Hills. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels. Cross-flow filtered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. A mix of red and black berry, spice and forest floor aromas rise from the glass. A hint of volatile acidity quickly blows off. Thoroughly seductive in the mouth, with luscious flavors of black cherry, dark red berry and plum. The fruit goodness seems to build over time and the wine achieves progressive goodness the more one tastes it. Highly flavorful, yet gracious in character, with a substantial tannic backbone that ensures age ability, and a delightful finish offering both intensity of fruit flavor and valued grip. Score: 93. The most intense and complex barrels in the cellar. The best effort for the vintage. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. The intoxicating nose offers aromas of black cherry, cigar box and exotic spices. Very classy and impeccably balanced, with mid weight flavors of black cherry and ripe strawberry underlain with a pleasing earthiness. 2013 Brooks Rastaban Willamette Valley Oregon Pinot Noir 12.0% alc., pH 3.61, TA 0.59, 300 cases, $55. Rastaban is a star, the eye of the dragon in the constellation Draco. A barrel selection first produced in 2003 from Momtazi Vineyard. This wine is composed of Pommard, 115 and 777 clones from the Brooks Estate Vineyard that has some of the oldest, biodynamically farmed vines in the Willamette Valley. A consistent elegant style of wine vinified with small amount of new oak - 20% in this vintage, and often the best effort of the vintage. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. The promising aromas of cherry, black plum, spice and forest floor entice. Light to mid weight in style and reflective of the vintage, with a pleasing charge of red and purple fruits accented with cardamom spice and Italian herbs. 2011 Big Table Farm Brooks Estate Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Riesling 11.4% alc., 91 cases, $28. Barrel fermented to dryness with native yeasts and complete malolactic fermentation. · Moderate golden yellow color and slight haze (unfiltered) in the glass. Lovely aromas of lemon zest, wet stone, buttered brioche and paraffin. Very flavorful with pleasing notes of lemon and grapefruit with a touch of spice and a subtle petrol note. Slightly creamy in the mouth with a firm grip of lemony acidity on the bright finish. I don’t drink much Riesling, but I know a great one when I taste it. Score: 90. 2009 Brooks Rastaban Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir 13.8% alc., $50. Rastaban is a star, the eye of the dragon in the constellation Draco. This wine is composed of the most complete and intense barrels in the cellar and represents the best effort for the vintage. 100% estate fruit. · Medium reddish-purple color in the glass. Aromas of very ripe black cherries, sassafras, prune and a slight medicinal note. Moderately lush core of dark raspberry, black cherry and dark chocolate flavors creating quite a noticeable mid palate impression and finishing long and powerful. A juicy wine with lift from good acidity in the background. Soft in the mouth with balanced tannins. Bogged down with slightly jammy fruit and ripeness. Good (+). 2007 Brooks Janus Willamette Valley Oregon Pinot Noir Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Intoxicating aromas of cherry, wilted rose and potpourri lead to a lightly weighted and elegant wine that is more savory than fruity with flavors of tea leaf, herbs, tobacco, smoke alongside light red fruits, finishing with a dry, slightly grippy finish.
