Vineyard: Riva Ranch
Owner | Wente Family |
Appellation | Arroyo Seco |
Story | Karl L. Wente, grandson of the winery's founder (C.H. Wente) and grandfather of present-day winemaker Karl D. Wente, established this vineyard in the Arroyo Seco in 1962. It was one of the first modern-day vineyards in the Arroyo Seco. The vineyard is named Riva Ranch, in honor of Alfred Riva, who grew apricots on the property before selling to the Wentes. Some of the original Chardonnay blocks are nearly 50 years old.
The Wente family worked with Professor Olmo at UC Davis to developa virus-free stock of Chardonnay from the pool of Livermore Valley selections originally brought in by Ernest Wente in 1912. The original clones, FPS 04 and 05, were planted here before becoming the most widely planted Chardonnay clones in the state. |
Acres | Over 1,000 acres |
Location | West of Highway 101 at southern end of Arroyo Seco AVA in a river canyon with an underlying water table. |
