2016 Three Sticks Durell Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., pH 3.56, TA 0.61, 430 cases, $70. Released August 14, 2018. Soil is volcanic, rocky loam. Clones 667, 115, 777, 943 and Swan selection. 25% whole cluster. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels, 57% new. · Moderately dark garnet color in the glass. The nose offers a pleasing marriage of black cherry fruit and oak-driven toast aromas. A tide of vivid black cherry, blueberry and blackberry fruits roll over the palate and end with relish. Mid weight in style, with lavish oak -driven flavors of toast, spice and dark chocolate. I am not a big fan of noticeable oak, but somehow it works in this wine. Score: 93. 2015 Chateau St. Jean Single Vineyard Durell Vineyard Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 14.2%, pH 3.67, TA 0.63, alc., $35. Harvest Brix 24.3º. Clones 5 and 15. Barrel fermented, complete malolactic fermentation, aged 15 months in French oak barrels, 45% new. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. The aromatic profile appeals, offering scents of lemon, pineapple, butter, flint and toasty oak. Richly styled with lemon, yellow peach and pineapple flavors as well as spice. There is enough acidity to balance the robust fruit sap and the fruit-driven finish shows length. This is a wine for fans who like a Chardonnay awash in fruit along with boisterous oak engagement. 2015 Fulcrum Durell Vineyard Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 14.2% alc., 175 cases, $48. Inaugural Chardonnay from this producer. Dijon clone 95. Barrel fermented and aged 11 months in 42% French oak barrels. Unfined and lightly filtered. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. The nose is mildly reductive with the distinct aroma of flint along with scents of apple, banana and vanilla creme. Somewhat richly endowed with flavors of peach, salted apple, pineapple and brioche with a subtle green note. 2015 Sojourn Durell Vineyard Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 14.3% alc., pH 3.31, TA 0.65, 450 cases, $48. Cleaned-up Wente selections. Whole cluster pressed, fermented with native yeast and aged in French oak barrels, 40% new. 100% malolactic fermentation. Bottled unfined. · Light golden yellow color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with aromas of lemon, apple, spice, vanilla creme, brioche and nuts. The palate is infused with citrus, but also pear and apple flavors with a hint of oak. 2015 Chateau St. Jean Reserve Sonoma County Chardonnay 14.4% alc., $65. Winemaker Margo Van Staaveren’s signature is on the heavy, embossed bottle. 54% Robert Young, 26% Cold Creek, 12% Durell and 8% Belle Terre vineyards. Each lot fermented separately. Aged on the lees for 18 months in French oak barrels. A barrel selection for the final blend. · Moderate golden yellow. A classy wine by all definition that is highly nuanced and intriguing. Aromas and flavors of lemon oil, lemon meringue, spice, ripe pear and banana with a dash of oak. Enough fruit to satisfy, but gracious acid (read “mineralitydriven”) is the soul of this wine. The lemon creme finish has uncommon staying power. Still terrific when tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. The winemaker’s best effort and it shows. Score: 96. 2015 Gary Farrell Durell Vineyard Sonoma Valley Chardonnay 12.7% alc., pH 3.33, TA 0.71, 245 cases, $65. Released October 2017. Old Went selection planted in rocky, volcanic soils. Harvest Brix 21.5º. Whole cluster pressed and transferred to 35% new French oak barrels and 500-L puncheons for native fermentation and 8 months of barrel aging. Racked once off the primary lees just before bottling. · Moderate golden yellow color in the glass. Leading off an impressive offering are aromas of lemon zest, cut apple white nectarine, warm biscuit and slate. Richly flavored and somewhat weighty in the mouth, with flavors of lemon, grapefruit, banana and honey. Crisp in character, with taut acidity on the finish that leaves a fresh citrus impression. Stately aromas of lemon-lime, flint, spice and marzipan, opening over time in a seductive progression. Captivating vibrancy with impeccable barrel integration and overall harmony. Bracing flavors of lemon-lime and golden apple play off subtle accents of butter and vanilla. Slightly creamy in texture, with a sustaining finish of uncommon length. Complex nose leads off with aromas of lemon, peach, apple, white flower blossom and spice. Noticeably smooth in the mouth with vivid flavors of lemon and grilled peach. 2014 Loring Wine Company Durell Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 14.2% alc., pH 3.66, 200 cases, $50. Released September 2015. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is very reticent upon opening. The core flavors of sweet red and purple berries and Damsel plum have lift and energy from an underlying lively acidity. The tannins are well integrated and the wine finishes on a tart cherry note. Much more enjoyable the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle when the aromatics and flavors became more expressive and the wine more cohesive. Score: 90. 2014 Three Sticks Durell Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 14.1% alc., pH 3.50, TA 0.62, 352 cases, $65. 30% whole cluster. Aged 15 months in French oak barrels, 60% new. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is highly engaging with aromas of cherry, raspberry, earthy mushroom, cinnamon spice and slightly charred oak picking up intensity over time in the glass. The middleweight flavors of black cherry, dark raspberry and blueberry are expansive and nicely accented with spice and oak. Plenty of charm and elegance with a silky mouthfeel, good vibrancy and welcome finishing power. This wine really blossomed later in the day when re-tasted from an opened and recorked bottle. Predominant sources include Zio Tony Ranch, Durell, Dutton Ranch, Parmalee Hill, Sun Chase, and Gap’s Crown vineyards. Whole cluster pressed, indigenous yeast fermentations, aged sur lie with weekly stirring, 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aged in 35% new French oak barrels. · Moderate straw color and clear in the glass. Aromas of lemon, yellow applesauce, lemongrass and nutty oak. 2013 Sojourn Sonoma Coast Chardonnay 14.1% alc., pH 3.62, TA 0.60, 600 cases, $38. Release in spring 2015. A blend from several vineyards including Sangiacomo Vella and Green Acres ranches, Sangiacomo Roberts Road Vineyard, Durell Vineyard, and Campbell Ranch Vineyard. Each component was fermented separately with native yeast in French oak barrels, 30% new and underwent 100% malolactic fermentation. Regular lees stirring was performed during the first three months of fermentation and aging. After 11 months, the components were blend to create a winemaker’s cuvée, and bottled unfined. · Moderate golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Aromas of lemon cake, nutty spread and floral bouquet. Some richness of lemon, honey and caramel flavor with a noticeable oak overlay. Slightly creamy, finishing with a subtle saline note. Score: 89. Racked, lightly fined and put back into barrel and bottled unfiltered. · Moderately light golden yellow color in the glass. Complex nose offering scents of lemon bar, melon, apple, fig spread and a hint of oak. Very charming on the palate with flavors of lemon and yellow apple, and a slightly lush and creamy mouth feel. The nose is not open for business, only offering aromas of bramble and mushroom. Much better on the palate, with a luscious core of black cherry and black raspberry fruit lifted by a lively cut of juicy acidity and a touch of oak enlarging the envelope. Fruit is sourced from two blocks: Old Wente 1 and Rocky Flat (Dijon 76). 100% malolactic fermentation in barrel. Aged 15 months in 100% French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderate golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Many discoverable nuances in this wine that leads with aromas of poached pear, cut apple, kiwi, warm toffee, roasted nuts and buttery brioche. Discreetly rich flavors of lemon curd, yellow peach syrup, caramel apple and honey lead the way. The wine lacks a bit of acidic verve, but otherwise fulfills its mission. Score: 91. A little more richness and softness that the Hudson bottling, and more Russian River Valley in character, The flavors of yellow peach are accented with a hint of smoke, toast, and saline. 2013 Pali Wine Co. Durrell Vineyard Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., 65 cases, $58. Bottled April 2015. Clones 115, 667 and Pommard 5. Aged 15 months in 100% French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is very savory, offering aromas of dried herbs, clay and oak. More savory herbs show up on the palate that displays somewhat closed fruit flavors of dark red berries, black plum, and boysenberry, married to oak-gifted notes of marzipan and toast. The gruff tannins stick out in this rustic wine which has a pleasing mid palate attack but a short finish that offers a bit of alcoholic warmth. May need time to rouse itself. Score: 87. Harvest Brix 24.3º. 100% 667 clone. 100% de-stemmed, 5-day cold soak, aged 15 months in 100% French oak barrels, 33% new. Unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is quite shy and primary initially with subtle aromas of cherry and raspberry. Over time in the glass, a pleasing deep cherry aromas emerges. Bright and juicy with flavors of earth-kissed red cherry and cranberry, offering good mid palate richness and a modest explosion of red fruits on the finish. Bottled 1 month before this tasting. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Subdued, but pleasant aromas of red cherry, loam and spice. Delicious with obvious potential, featuring vivid flavors of raspberry, cherry and spice. The oak is fully integrated and the fine-grain tannins are only modestly imposing. A true rosé made from grapes grown expressly for this wine from the 8.5-acre Ranch House Block planted in 2005. Pressed immediately to 50% neutral oak barrels and 50% stainless steel tanks. · Pale orange color and clear in the glass. Demure aromas of strawberries, rose petals and seashells. Slow to evolve on the nose, but eventually very enticing with scents of ollaliberry jam, black raspberries and baking spices. Full-bodied but streamlined, with a decadent core of dark red berry fruits. Smooth and bright with well-proportioned tannin and a complimentary oak sheen. The amazing finish is ridiculously long, returning over a minute for several encores. The longest finish of all the Loring wines in this vintage. Score: 93. Aged 15 months in 50% new French oak. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Opens over time in the glass to reveal stellar aromas of cherry, strawberry and complimentary oak. Modest in weight, with a core of earthy dark red and black berry fruits overlain with a prominent oak sheen. There are notes of stem and savory herbs that might be oak-driven. The finish is a bit sharp and angular. Tasted the next day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine showed a prominent oak overlay. Score: 88. From Old Wente 5 Block (ripe flavor) and V9 Block which is one of the rockiest and windiest areas of Durell (broad flavor and minerality). Fermented in concrete egg and aged in stainless steel for 14 months. No malolactic fermentation. Winemakers Don Van Staaveren and Tracy Bledsoe. · Moderate yellow gold color and clear in the glass. Vibrant and pure aromas of lemon, peach jam, cantaloupe, passion fruit and a hint of butter. Crisp and lively in the mouth, with refreshing flavors of lemon, yellow grapefruit and peach. The finish displays a good bite of acidity along with steely, iced lemon flavors. This wine will please lovers of clean, unoaked, and unplugged Chardonnay. Score: 92. Brix at harvest 22.5º. 100% de-stemmed. · Light garnet in color in the glass. Aromatic from the start, with scents of cherry, raspberry, sandalwood and a pleasant note of spice. Light in weight but flavorful, featuring a cherry theme that makes an impression on the mid palate, carrying over to a refreshing finish fueled by bright acidity. Shy initially, opening with swirling to reveal aromas of spiced dark berries, herbs, and dark rose petals. Striking mid palate presence with a vanguard of black cherry fruit that really coats the mouth and hangs on for a memorable, long finish in which the fruit slips off the back of the palate like a silk sheet. Today, the vineyard is owned by Bill and Ellie Price, but still managed by Steve Hill and his son Ned. Today the vineyard comprises 180 acres planted primarily to Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Clones are 115, 667 and Pommard 5. · Scents of darker fruits with notes of oak char and cigar. Lush, chewy and potent fresh plum and blackberry fruit is front and center with an undertow of oak. 2005 Saxon Brown Durell Vineyard Hayfield Block Sonoma Valley Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., 99 cases, $48. Winemaking is traditional with a three day cold soak, slow fermentation, pressed to barrel after 14 days, racked off of the lees after malolactic fermentation, and returned back to the same barrels for 10 months of additional aging. · There is noticeable oak in the nose and on the finish upon opening, but with air time, the oak merges into the background. Aromas of spicy Bing cherry remind me of good Russian River Valley Pinots. This is a very tasty styled wine with plenty of sweet cherry liquor, tea and soy. The texture is soft as a down pillow.
