River Road Ranch Russian River Valley Pinot Noir $18.99. Noted winemaker Daryl Groom has received multiple “Winemaker of the Year” awards, and at one point in his career, made Penfolds’ flagship red, Grange Hermitage. · Moderate reddish purple hue in the glass. The nose offers inviting aromas of dark red and black fruits, cedar, spice and mushroom. A luscious, fruity wine, with plenty of black cherry, black raspberry and pomegranate fruit flavors complimented by hints of oak, grilled beef and cola. Firmly structured with tannins showing up on the lingering finish. Score: 90. Reviewed January 17, 2016 WINERY » ARTICLE »
2014 Cameron Dundee Hills Oregon Chardonnay 12.9% alc., $19.50. A barrel fermented wine that is a blend of grapes from Clos Electrique and Abbey Ridge vineyards. · Moderately light golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Aromas of crusty lemon pie, lime peel and lees lead off. Smooth and slightly viscous in the mouth, with attractive flavors of lemon and green apple with very little oak in put. The flavors sneak up rather than shout out in this pleasant drink that is nicely balanced. Score: 89. Reviewed July 9, 2016 WINERY » ARTICLE »
2014 Westrey Abbey Ridge Vineyard Dundee Hills Oregon Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 251 cases, $45. 18 days on the skins, racked directly to barrel, aged 12 months in French oak barrels, 20% new. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Brooding aromas of darker raspberry fruit, smoke and tobacco lead off. Fairly bold and concentrated, with flavors of oak-kissed black cherry and a subtle petrol note. Nicely balanced with a sweet cherry and exotically spiced finish. This wine needs more time to integrate the oak, but the potential is obvious. Score: 90. Reviewed July 9, 2016 WINERY » ARTICLE »
2012 Westrey Cuvée 20 Dundee Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $49. 20th vintage. Sourced from 35-year-old dry-farmed vines. 25% “Coury clone” Abbey Ridge Vineyard and 75% Pommard clone Oracle Estate Vineyard. Unfiltered. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Somewhat reticent, offering demure aromas of dark red berries, cherries and sous-bois. Delicious flavors of dark red fruits with the slightest oak adding a welcome accent. Fresh and juicy with good tension, balanced tannins, an intense mid palate attack, and a generous finish displaying a good cut of acidity. Tasted the following day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the wine was more savory and slightly gamey with a remarkably long finish. This wine should age effortlessly. Score: 91-92. 2010 Westrey Abbey Ridge Vineyard Dundee Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $42. · Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. The nose has a briar, dried oak and geranium theme with a delicate cherry fruit aroma. Much more appealing on the palate with flavors of red cherry, rhubarb and oak. Very elegant, with gossamer tannins, tangy acidity and a faint dried herb streak in the background. The oak tends to overshadow the fruit. This bottle is not up to the usual high standard of Westrey wines from this vineyard. Score: 86. Reviewed November 9, 2013 WINERY » ARTICLE »
2009 J. Christopher Dundee Hills Cuvée Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 450 cases, $35. A barrel selection from several vineyards including Bella Vida, Baptista, Maresh, Charlie’s, Abbey Ridge and Le Pavillon. Unfiltered. · Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. Very shy initially, but opens beautifully over time in the glass revealing aromas of dark red and purple fruits with wood spice and subtle oak vanillin. Earthy and charming, with a medium weight core of darker Bing cherry and raspberry flavors perfectly accented by oak notes of spice and anise, and displaying a fancy thrust of pure fruit on the finish. Light on its feet and very accommodating. A step up over the Willamette Valley bottling. Reviewed January 12, 2012 WINERY » ARTICLE »
2009 Cameron Abbey Ridge Vineyard Willamette Valley Chardonnay 13.2% alc., $47. · Medium straw color in the glass. This is a really strange wine and perhaps I got an anomalous bottle. Aromas of yeasty bread, oak toast and peanut butter. Styled with piercing lemon drop acidity. Citrus-driven flavors with notes of oak-derived banana, toast, nuts and peanut butter. Leaves a lemony trail on the finish. This producer’s Chardonnay was recommended to me but I need to reserve judgement since I did not have a second bottle to sample. 2006 Westrey Abbey Ridge Vineyard Dundee Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $36. · This seemed to be an off bottle and not consistent with other Westrey offerings this vintage. The nose offered cranberry, orange peel and a hint of volatile acidity. Earthy, with black raspberry jam and rhubarb flavors with echoes of oak and a citrus overlay.
