Jay Somers winemaker and Todd Hansen grower. · Light golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Faint lemon aromas are accented with a touch of hazelnut and white flower. 2014 Seven of Hearts Very Special Reserve Oregon Pinot Noir 13.7% alc., pH 3.53, TA 0.68, 123 cases, $75. 40% Luminous Hills Vineyard, 20% Armstrong Vineyard, 20% Bjornson Vineyard and 20% Lia’s Vineyard. 40% 115, 30% Pommard, 20% 777 and 10% Wädenswil. 40% whole clusters. Aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 40% new. · Light cherry red color in the glass. The array of aromas are quite pleasing and persistent, consisting of cherry, strawberry, sandalwood and caramelized oak. On entry, there is more explosion of red fruit flavor than one would expect from the light color. There is plenty of spice from the whole cluster, but no herbal character. The wine is deftly balanced, with a satiny texture and the majestic finish lingers with succulent acidity. 2014 White Rose Estate Winemaker’s Cuvée Dundee Hills Oregon Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $105.White Rose Estate, Lia’s, Anderson Family and Luciole vineyards. 95% whole cluster. 30% new French oak. · Moderately light cherry red color in the glass. Typical whole cluster nose with aromas of cherry, exotic spices, and rose petal. Striking flavors of fresh cherry and strawberry in a mid weight style with a touch of anise. 2013 White Rose Estate Lia’s Vineyard Chehalem Mountains Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 12.6% alc., $60. Clone 115 planted in 1998. 100% whole cluster fermentation. Aged in French oak barrels, 13% new. · Light cherry red color in the glass. The nose is both fruity and savory with both dark red and blueberry fruits. 2012 Seven of Hearts Willamette Valley Rosé Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., RS 0.14%, 126 cases, $15. Sourced from Luminous Hills, Armstrong and Lia’s vineyards. · Medium pink watermelon in color in the glass. Bright aromas of fresh strawberries, watermelon and peach with a hint of pastry cream. Not a wimpy rosé, but one with a little heft and backbone offering bright flavors of strawberries and cherries and a finish that is crisp and refreshing. The perfect summer BBQ wine. Very good. 2012 Seven of Hearts Lia’s Vineyard Chehalem Mountains Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.1% alc., pH 3.62, TA 0.59, 126 cases, $35. Pommard, Wädenswil, Mariafeld, 115 and “828.” Jory volcanic soil. No whole cluster. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. The nose is rich with hi-tone aromas of dark red cherries and berries. Sleek and seductive on the palate, with a charge of cherry, raspberry and red plum flavors carrying over to a persistent aromatic finish. 2012 Seven of Hearts Very Special Reserve Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.0% alc., pH 3.57, TA 0.59, 126 cases, $75. This wine is only made in very special vintages. From Luminous Hills, Armstrong, Lia’s and Durant vineyards. 33% whole cluster fermented. Aged in 23% new French oak. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. Extroverted nose offering aromas of wild berries and exotic spices. Forceful and assertive on the palate, yet elegant, with a perfectly ripened core of berry fruit still mildly compressed by tannins. Similar to the Special Reserve, but more aloof at this stage. After meticulously tasting barrel samples blind before bottling, only vineyards that meet the neo-classical objective for a given vintage are selected for this blend. White Rose Vineyard (11%), Vista Hills Vineyard (11%), Anderson Family Vineyard (17%), Guillen Vineyard (28%), Lia’s Vineyard (22%), and Luciole Vineyard (11%). Pommard, Wädenswil, 777 and 115. Harvest Oct 11-26. 100% whole cluster fermentation. Total skin contact 16-26 days. Aged 16 months in 14% new French oak. · Medium reddish purple hue in the glass. The nose is shy initially, opening slowly to reveal scents of fresh dark berries, spice and cut flowers. Much more elegantly styled with a satisfying core of black raspberry, plum and black cherry flavors expansive on the palate and generating a lengthy, spice-laden finish highlighted by sweet oak and suave tannins. Lovely aromas of black cherry, dark red rose petal, toasty oak, and exotic spice. This wine fills the mouth with a suave fruit attack and holds on through a tenacious finish that sports some fine-grain but minimally astringent tannins. The middleweight flavors of black cherry, black raspberry and spice are sparkling and fresh. Significantly more richness than the 2011 version of this wine. Dark red cherries and berries are featured in this wine which has a tasty core of delicate fruit and some intensity on the finish, but the tannins are mildly imposing and there is a subtle green undertone of unripeness. 2009 Longplay Jory Bench Reserve Lia’s Vineyard Chehalem Mountains Oregon Pinot Noir 14.3% alc., $25. Todd Hanson grower and Aron Hess winemaker. · Light reddish-purple color and slightly cloudy in the glass. Faint aromas of red fruits with noticeable oak toast. Fruity, smoky and savory in a lighter style featuring flavors of earth-kissed red cherries and berries. 2008 Longplay “Jory Slope” Lia’s Vineyard Chehalem Mountains Willamette Valley Chardonnay 14.5% alc., pH 3.69, 63 cases, $24. 17-year-old vines. Aged 16 months on the lees in neutral oak. Low-yielding own-rooted Wente clone. · Lovely array of scents including apple pie, white peach, dried mango and marzipan. Very tasty green apple, white stone fruit and citrus core with an appealing hint of yeast. Pleasantly creamy and finishing with a spark of acidity. 2008 Longplay Lia’s Vineyard Chehalem Mountains Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., pH 3.95, 287 cases, $24. 55% Dijon 115, 20% Wädenswil, and 10% Mariafeld clones. Indigenous yeast fermentation. Aged in 10% new French oak barrels for 10 months. · Darker fruited scents with a floral note and an underlying roasted coffee aroma. 2008 Longplay “Jory Bench Reserve” Lia’s Vineyard Chehalem Mountains Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., pH 3.95, 287 cases, $30. Four barrels in the cellar stood out composed of 25% Pommard, 25% Wädenswil, 40% Dijon 115, and 10% Mariafeld clones. Aged in 20% new and 80% seasoned French oak barrels for 10 months. · Demure fruit on the nose with a roasted coffee, toasty bent. Earth-kissed dark fruits with tar and coffee mocha notes. Still tight and significantly better the next day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle showing tasty black cherry essence with a subtle toasty oak tone.
