Barrel fermented and aged 12 months in 100% French oak barrels, 30% new, 70% neutral. · Light golden straw color in the glass. Fruit aromas of green apple and lemon are framed with a note of flinty minerality. On the palate, a good cut of acidity underlies a pleasing melange of apple and citrus flavors that have some length on the bright finish. Slightly creamy and unpretentious, with fruit at the forefront and very little, if any, oak intrusion. Score: 89. Reviewed September 18, 2015 WINERY » ARTICLE »
2013 Pali Wine Co. Huber Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir 15.1% alc., 627 cases, $58. Bottled April 2015. Vineyard dates to 1987, making it one of the oldest vineyards in the Sta. Rita Hills AVA. Norm and Troudl Huber are the owners and caretakers. Aged 16 months in 100% French oak barrels, 50% new. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Somewhat earthy and savory on the nose with scents of dark cherry and raspberry and a hint of spice. Plenty of sweet, lush and well-ripened dark red and black fruit sap is brewed with a compliment of earthy flora in this wine that sports balanced tannins and just a bit of inviting oak. A little alcoholic warmth is evident on the finish. Score: 90. Reviewed September 18, 2015 WINERY » ARTICLE »
2012 Liquid Farm White Hill Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay 13.8% alc., 988 cases, $40. 63% Bentrock, 16% Zotovich, 8% Rita’s Crown, 6% Huber, 4% Clos Pepe, 3% Radian, and 1% Kessler-Haak vineyards. A homage to Chablis-styled Old World Chardonnay. · Moderately light golden yellow color and clear in the glass. Aromas of white peach, apple, citrus peel, nut oils and smoky oak. Slightly creamy, with an array of flavors including lemon pie, apple, pear, toffee and fleur-de-sel. Less boisterous than many California Chardonnays, but very pleasing, with a good riff of underlying acidity, and a satisfying lemon drop finish. Score: 92. Reviewed March 16, 2015 WINERY » ARTICLE »
2011 La Montagne Huber Vineyard Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir 50 cases, $55. From an older vineyard first planted in 1987. Clone 115. Aged 18 months in 50% new and 50% neutral French oak barrels. · Medium reddish-purple color in the glass. The nose is aloof initially, offering little fruit. On the palate, the wine tastes of tar and oily oak, with a modicum of dark berry flavor that is rather bland. The mouth feel is silky and the tannins are well managed. Tasted the next day from a previously opened and re-corked bottle, the fruit still had not shown up on the nose which exhibited aromas of dusty oak, stem and underbrush, and the flavor profile had not changed. Tasted twice. Score: 84. Reviewed February 22, 2014 WINERY » ARTICLE »
