Clones are Pommard, Wädenswil and Dijon 115 and 777. 51% whole clusters, native yeast fermentation, aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 75% new. Fined with egg whites and unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Brooding aromas of black cherry, rose and leaf. The fruit trends more to the dark red spectrum in this middleweight wine. The ripe tannins are in gorgeous balance, and the lasting finish soars with exceptional cherry goodness. 2016 Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., 300 cases, $69. This is the only vineyard that was kept intact when the property was bought in 1992 and has old time wide row spacing. That said, this is always my favorite vineyarddesignate from Cristom. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Deep aromas of black cherry, spice and burnt tobacco. Decisive attack of black cherry fruit in a mid weight style with just the right accent of oak spice. Reserved, fine-grain tannins add support and lend a hand to the suave texture. Still a bit reserved but can be enjoyed now and the balance predicts at least ten years of pleasure down the road. 2015 Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., pH 3.68, TA 0.55, 554 cases, $70. Marjorie Vineyard is Cristom’s oldest estate plantings, predating the company back to 1982. Named in honor of winegrower-owner Tom Gerrie’s grandmother. Own-rooted, lower-density plantings. Pommard, Wädenswil and Dijon 114, 115 and 777. Vines produce very small, highly concentrated clusters. 59% whole cluster native yeast fermentation. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 58% new. Fined with egg whites, unfiltered. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Complex and sexy nose, presenting aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, spice, tobacco leaf, menthol and vanilla. Mid weight flavors of dark cherry and berry framed by husky tannins. Commendable richness and length in the mouth, with the fruit becoming more charming over time in the glass. The juicy, persistent finish rounds out a special wine. Noticeably better when re-tasted later in the day and still exceptional when re-tasted three days later from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Marjorie is usually my Cristom paramour. 2014 Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., pH 3.63, TA 0.60, 381 cases, $69. Only vineyard kept when the property was bought in 1992. This upper field had been planted in 1982 but abandoned in the late 1980s. The vineyard was named in honor of founder Paul Gerrie's late mother. The vineyard is distinctive in that it is own-rooted and lower density (6' x12') plantings. 8.5 acres are planted between the lower slopes of Louise Vineyard and Eileen Vineyard at the top of the hill. By 2004, Marjorie was re-planted with young vines grafted to phylloxera resistant rootstocks to supplant the older original vines. In 1999, the original Martini clone was grafted over to Dijon 114, 115 and 777. Beginning in 2004, re-planting of Marjorie was undertaken with Pommard, Wädenswil, 114, 115 and 777. Some original Pommard and Wädenswil vines remain. Both original and young vines contribute to this bottling. Harvest Brix 24.3º-24.7º. 48% whole clusters, no cold soak, native yeast fermentations, minimum effective additions of sulfur and tartaric acid, bladder pressed, and aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 47% new. Bottled after fining with egg whites and unfiltered. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. The nose offers a whole cluster delight of black cherry, rose petal, cinnamon, and exotic spice aromas. The whole cluster also embellishes the palate that features a mid weight core of succulent, well-spiced cherry fruit that is flat-out delicious. Welcome balance, with silky tannins and juicy acidity, finishing with a lengthy stream of spiced cherry and raspberry fruits. Even better the following day when tasted from a previously opened and re-corked bottle showing more power and depth and an even more gorgeous finish. Score: 96. 2012 Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $58. The only original vineyard kept intact after the property was bought in 1992. The vineyard has phylloxera to the vines are gradually being replaced. This is first vintage that is not entirely from old vines, containing a single barrel of new vines.The “prettiest” vineyard wine in the Cristom lineup that is usually elegant and spicy. · Moderate reddish purple hue in the glass. Aromas of dark cherry pie filling, marzipan, brandied raisin and baker’s yeast. Elegant flavors of black cherry, spice and floral nuance with a firm backing of tannin. Modest and seductive, very smooth on the palate, finishing with good persistence. Needs at least a year or two in bottle for full enjoyment. Score: 90-91. 2010 Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., pH 3.69, TA 0.59, 363 cases, $55. This vineyard was originally planted in 1982 and is one of the oldest vineyards in the Eola-Amity Hills AVA, and home to some of the oldest vines on the Cristom estate. It is situated on a gently sloped east facing hillside between 480 and 615 feet above sea level. Named for owner Paul Gerrie’s mother, the first single vineyard estate Marjorie was released in 1994. The soil is primarily Jory in type. Phylloxera struck the vineyard in 2000, and beginning in 2007, replanting was initiated with Dijon clones 113, 115, 777, Pommard and Wädenswil grafted onto phylloxera-resistant rootstocks. The vineyard produces very small, concentrated clusters. Aged 17 months in 53% new Burgundian cooperage. · Moderate reddish-purple color in the glass. Bombastic and exotic aromas of red and black cherries, whole cluster spice and floral notes, smoky oak, incense and licorice. Delicious core of cherry fruits which are broad in the mouth and supported by integrated notes of spice, fennel, anise and mocha-laden oak. A special wine that is built for the long haul, with firm, fine-grain tannins, refreshing acidic verve and a lengthy finish of great energy. A whole cluster triumph that really impressed me. 2009 Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., $59. Planted on its own roots and the only vineyard resurrected rather than replanted when Gerrie obtained the property in 1992. 8-acres, 3 clones. Phylloxera has taken its toll so production is limited. 16th vintage. · Moderately light reddish-purple hue in the glass. The nose is well-fruited, showing aromas of red cherries, strawberries and spice. An elegant, feminine wine that is flat-out delicious. Middleweight flavors of dark red cherries and red berries, accented by the slightest oak and spice, and robed in firm but silky tannins. Very soft like the hair of an angel. 2008 Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., pH 3.70, TA 0.56, 440 cases, $65. Soils have highest percentage of Jory type compared to other estate vineyards. Pommard, Wädenswil, Dijon 114, 115 and 777 clones. 43% whole clusters. Native yeast fermentation in 1 to 5 ton open top fermenters. Aged 18 months in 67% new Burgundian oak barrels. · Moderately dark reddish-purple color in the glass. A well-composed wine with complex perfume of dark red raspberry jam and cherry compote with hints of oak, damp earth and baking spice. Very smooth on the palate with moderately intense flavors of dark red fruits and plum sauce. The high-quality fruit is wrapped in firm, dry tannins, the mouth feel is all silk and satin and there is a good cut of acidity on the finish. The wine is a bit drab at present and only time will tell what the ultimate outcome will be, but I suspect the result will be very gratifying. Very good. Reviewed November 30, 2011 WINERY » ARTICLE »
2005 Cristom Marjorie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $24 (375 ml). · The nose starts off with cherries and a hint of sage, cardamon, and char. With air, the aromas pick up intensity and fruitiness showing an intense cherry scent. A subtle and discreet wine strutting tasty black cherries, savory herbs, some earth and a hint of chocolate.
