Fined with egg whites and unfiltered. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. A beguiling nose of black cherry, black raspberry and baking spice aromas. The core of gently oak-embossed darker berry and stone fruits attracts notice on entry and finish. Trim and toned, with reserved tannins and a spectacular finish that lingers. 2015 Cristom Jessie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., pH 3.70, TA 0.56, 1,006 cases, $65. This vineyard is named for winegrower and owner Tom Gerrie’s great-grandmother Jessie Summers. Vineyard was established in 1994 on one of the steepest hillsides in Oregon and therefore one of the most challenging to farm on the Cristom Estate. High-density plantings of 2,311 vines per acre. 49% whole cluster native yeast fermentation. Aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 52% new. Bottled after egg white fining without filtering. · Moderately light garnet color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with aromas of fresh berry basket, spice, burnt tobacco and toasty oak, soaring in intensity over time in the glass. Mid weight flavors of black cherry and black raspberry have a savory spice and tobacco underpinning. Fresh and vivid, with somewhat firm tannins and a satiny mouth feel. A bit tight upon opening, showing more openness and harmony when re-tasted the next day and two days later from a previously opened and re-corked bottle. Score: 93. 2014 Cristom Jessie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., pH 3.76, TA 0.57, 964 cases, $59. This 11.53-acre vineyard was planted in 1994 on a very steep, east-facing hillside site. Vines are planted at a high density of 2,311 vines per acre. Basalt soils including Jory and Nekia. Clones 115, 114, 777, 113, 667 and Pommard on three rootstocks. Harvest Brix 24.4º-24.9º. 40% whole clusters, no cold soak, native yeast fermentations, bladder pressed, aged 18 months in French oak barrels, 52% new. Bottled after fining with egg whites and unfiltered. · Moderately light reddish purple color in the glass. The aromas are varied and include cherry, rose petal, spice, earth and oak. Noticeable vigor in a mid weight styled wine with flavors of cherry, raspberry, spice and floral goodness. A little more masculine and “grounded” than the Marjorie with a little more structural tannins and perhaps a little less exuberant. 2012 Cristom Jessie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., $58. One of the steepest vineyard sites in the Willamette Valley. This wine is typically deep, dark and displays a tension between the fruit and structure. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Vibrant aromas of black cherry and Marionberry elevate over time in the glass. A wine that astonishes with a charge of cherry fruit that is pure and deeply flavored. The amazing spiced cherry essence caresses the palate and expands in the mouth, finishing with impressive length and a pleasing snap of acidity. This wine’s impeccable balance insures long term age ability. An exquisite wine that is fresh and vivid, and aims to please even at this young age. Score: 94-95. 2009 Cristom Jessie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., $44. · Moderately light reddish-purple color in the glass. Nicely perfumed with scents of black cherries and dark red raspberries with a hint of oak. A gentle, comforting style, with lighter weight flavors of cherry pie filling and a hint of charcoal and spice. Soft in the mouth with noticeable length on the finish. Very good. 2008 Cristom Jessie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 14.0% alc., pH 3.88, TA 0.54, 656 cases, $50. Steeply sloped vineyard planted to high density. Primarily Nekia soil of volcanic origin. Dijon 113, 114, 115, 667, 777 and Pommard clones. 44% whole clusters, native yeast used exclusively. Aged 17 months in 63% new Burgundian oak cooperage. · Medium reddish-purple robe in the glass. Aromas of jam on toast, woodshed and black cherry cola. Moderately extracted dark red and blue fruits with a touch of stem on the dry finish. The wine has a burly tannic backbone that is buffered by good acidity. Showing significant tannin and oak influence and reserved fruit now like so many young Pinot Noirs from Oregon’s 2008 vintage, several years will be needed for the wine to fully reveal its charms. 2005 Cristom Jessie Vineyard Eola-Amity Hills Willamette Valley Pinot Noir 13.5% alc., $24 (375 ml). · Wonderfully scented with spiced cherries. Black cherries and black raspberries offer great purity of flavor. Graceful and supple, with a velvety texture and a pleasing and long dry finish. An impressive effort.
