A noteworthy grower’s designate wine sourced from three meticulously developed and carefully farmed vineyards (Chenoweth Ranch, Treehouse and Bootleggers) managed by Chenoweth Vineyards. The Chenoweth family has lived in the Sebastopol area for more than a century and have farmed everything from wine grapes to apples, prunes and cherries. Charlie Chenoweth is well known as one of California’s most renowned vineyard managers. Clones are 667, 777, 115, 37, 23, Pommard and a Calera selection. 8% whole cluster. Aged 16 months in French oak barrels, 30% new. · Moderate garnet color in the glass. Energetic perfume of black cherry, raspberry and sous bois. A deeply flavored cherry core is framed by gracious tannins, spirited acidity and a welcome oak compliment. The wine is exquisitely balanced with a lingering finish that has good snap that demands another sip. Fresh as a mature barrel sample and everything you can ask for in a Pinot Noir. Score: 94. 2013 CIRQ. Treehouse Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., pH 3.53, TA 0.575, 1,748 cases, $125. Clones 23, 37, Calera, CC, Pommard and Swan. · Moderately dark reddish purple color in the glass. Earthkissed aromas of purple grape and boysenberry jam. Powerfully fruited with expressive and sappy purple and black fruits embellished by a touch of oak. Cashmere tannins make for a suave, velvety mouthfeel. 2012 CIRQ Treehouse Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., pH 3.54, TA 0.60, $100. Winemaker and proprietor Michael Browne’s great grandfather, Reuban Warren Simonds, graces this label. He helped put on many circus shows across the U.S. during the 1930s and 1940s. Clones 23, Swan, 37, Pommard and Calera. · Moderate reddish purple color in the glass. Lovely, effusive aromas of black cherry, black raspberry, vanilla and spice. The wine offers a pleasant marriage of fruit oak and an enticing texture. Very soft and approachable, with mid weight layered flavors of black cherry, raspberry, Damsel plum, and boysenberry fruits. Excellent harmony with a lasting, berry-driven finish with a kiss of oak. 2011 CIRQ. Treehouse Vineyard Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 14.5% alc., pH 3.40, TA 0.60, 462 cases, $100. Decanted for two hours before tasting and re-tasted eight hours later. · Very dark reddish-purple color in the glass. This wine has a nose you could drink with deep aromas of black raspberry jam, plump blueberries, black cherries, spice and subtle oak. Ripe and exuberant on the palate, with a full arsenal of rich flavors including blueberry, black raspberry, pomegranate and black currant, finishing with a burst of luscious berry fruit. A hint of the finest artisan dark chocolate and humus add interest. This is a bombastic wine that is extremely flavorful, yet balanced, sensual and inviting. It tastes like it was made from very small berries with a high skin to juice ratio. After decanting, the tannins were supportive but not imposing. The more I tasted this wine, the more I liked it as I continued to contemplate its nuances. When tasted later in the day, the wine had evolved and became silkier and livelier, and was a beautiful accompaniment to grilled King salmon. The flavor profile and structure are more reminiscent of true Sonoma Coast than Russian River Valley. It’s an outrageously flavored and expensive wine, but it is damn good. Score: 94. 2009 August West Russian River Valley Pinot Noir 14.7% alc., $28. August West is a partnership between Gary Franscioni, Howard Graham and winemaker Ed Kurtzman. · Aromas of cherry tart, baking spices and a hint of oak. Moderately intense and concentrated with flavors of cherry pie filling, berry compote, cola and oak. Very smooth on the palate with soft tannins. Solid but not exciting. Good.
